Boarding House, Episode 2: Surf Girls Are Whinyby Paris Cosby -- 06/26/2003
View Printable version of this article Alrighty, we're set for another episode of Boarding House: North Shore. I think it should be called “The Sunny Beats the Crap out of People Show,” judging from the previews. Maybe Sunny can tone his temper down a bit or perhaps the previews have shown a playful slap that's lost its intentions through editing. We'll see. He seems like a violent-kinda guy though and if it keeps up, I'm going to change his name from Sunny to, well, I don't know what yet. Suggestions are welcome! All I can come up with is Frowny or Meanie and those sound like two lost dwarfs from a Disney tale. Anyway, I suppose you'd like to hear what is going on this week at Boarding House, don't you? The girls (Holly and VK) are going to go head-to-head in the first elimination round of the Roxy Pro. It's the first jewel in the women's competition of the Vans Triple Crown. Let's peek in and see what they're up to! VK is still asleep while the other girls are getting ready. Apparently Veronica was out partying it up last night. That's not the smartest move considering she has to get up at 6 am and face the wild waves that bash the north shore of Oahu. That doesn't sound like a heaping load of fun with a hangover. For the moment, though, she's snoozing away without a care in the world. They're so cute when they're sleeping. Next we see Holly and she is up and at it and chatting on the phone with her Dad. A quick cut to an interview and Holly tells us that she's been getting up at 5 am and can't sleep in because she likes to be ready for a competition. Yes, Holly, we know... you're focused. Serious, serious Holly, she doesn't seem like much fun, does she? It must be all that focus or hocus pocus or whatever it is getting in the way. Now Holly is complaining that Veronica was out partying. Geez, does she ever stop complaining about Veronica? We saw a lot of this last week as well. I think Holly likes to complain about her just as much as she likes to focus. She says of VK and 'her type' (cat claws out and sharpened), "You're a model or you're a surfer. Not many people are successful at both." It seems as if Holly is a bit jealous of Veronica being a model or Roxy girl (this term is mentioned 800 times in this episode!) You would think being a Roxy girl was like being a Playboy bunny or something. I'm getting sick of Holly at this point. Now we see VK up and ready to face the day. Well, not quite ready to face the day, she's looking a little haggard this a.m. She can't seem to find her boards. Yep, Veronica is a little out of it. Hell of a night to pick to be out partying! I guess that's part of the surfer lifestyle though. Or, at least for some of them. It's not for Holly but I think you may have picked up on that. Holly's getting agitated with VK and her lack of organization. I'm utterly shocked. Blah, blah, blah. These girls need a nanny. Let's check in on the boys and see if they're behaving any better than the girls. Boys on the beach... Actually, just Sunny is on the beach. He's just come out of the water and he's in a happy mood. There's a big smiling Sunny walking down the beach but oh, no! Here come the dark clouds. It's not sunny any more. Okay, yeah, that was lame. Apparently, Sunny's mood has been darkened by the men walking behind his wife. He has a mean, jealous streak when it comes to men looking at his wife. Sunny's on his way over to confront the one guy and... here's the smack! Sunny smacks him right in the head and knocks him to the ground. He asks the guy him if he "liked looking at (his wife's) ass!" I'm sure he did! Probably not enough to get smacked to the ground for it though. According to Sunny, "Where I come from, you don't do that." Yeah, we heard that last episode too when you were going to beat the crap out of that drunk guy for talking to your wife. I'm wondering at this point where the hell Sunny does come from that it's acceptable to just go and smack strangers without repercussions. Anyway, as you can see, the boys aren't behaving much better than the girls at this point. Girls on the road... The girls are chatting about boys. Holly had a boyfriend in school but she was a better surfer than him so they broke up. They need surfer boyfriends. Holly and VK are actually agreeing on something! WOW! Although, the topic is hardly worth mentioning. Anyway, we're off to the Roxy Pro now – the first jewel in the Vans Triple Crown for the women. The second being the Women's Pro and the last the Billibon Pro which is held, incidentally, on Maui. Holly's excited. She's ready to go! There's a 30-minute time limit and she's in a heat with five other women. The best two rides are judged on speed, style, and size. According to the announcer, size matters. According to me, hell yeah, size matters! Ha! I had to throw that in. I'm finding that I need to entertain myself this episode and, well, sometimes I just fall into the gutter. No need to pull me out. I'm fine right where I am. Alright, alright, I'll climb out. Back to the surfing, right? Okay... Holly's doing well (all that focus is kicking in), she's in first place so far and she stays there taking the first heat. She'll head to the finals. Good for her! Veronica is up for her heat now and she really wants to win. She says, "If you wanna win, it really hurts to lose." Profound, isn't it? We see that the winds are picking up for VK's heat. It's her first time competing in the Triple Crown and, apparently, experience is everything in this competition. She crashes on her first try. Oh, she's down again on her second try. It's not looking good for Veronica! I'm surprised we don't see Holly off in a corner snickering away. Wow, VK is down for the third time. She's dead last in her heat right now. Perhaps she should have taken some lessons from Holly. She's got one more shot though. Nope, it didn't happen for her today. She's been eliminated. View Printable version of this article |
