American Juniors, July 2: Making The Bandby Sting7 -- 07/03/2003
View Printable version of this article Tuesday night, the Top Ten competed for the first seat in the band! A solid night of performances, songs from 1969, and excitement! After that show, I picked a winner. Assuming that they would call up a top three, and I said they should be: Morgan Burke Danielle White A.J. Melendez I said they would be: Tori Thompson Danielle White A.J. Melendez And I thought the first member of the band would be: Danielle White Ryan welcomes us and says there is a good news tonight. Someone will be named to band. Over four million votes cast last night! And, Tamyra Gray will be here! Intro last night’s judges: Deborah Gibson, Lamont Dozier, and Mary Wilson. We get a recap of last night’s performances, which you can read in detail here. The kids perform Mama Cass’ “Make Your Own Kind of Music.” Nice harmonizing! To the bench, Ryan says he will be calling the top three vote getters up. Ryan gives a brief summary of the performance critiques and their fate. Think American Idol in reverse! Now for the results: Morgan Burke – not in the Top 3. He takes the news well. Katelyn Tarver – not in the Top 3. Chauncey Matthews – not in the Top 3. Looks a little disappointed. Chantel Kohl – in the top 3! Her dad bursts into tears! Danielle White – not in the top 3. Wow! That leaves Tori, A.J., Taylor, Lucy, and Jordan. They are all jittery with excitement. I’m shocked that Danielle didn’t get the votes! Tori Thompson – in the top 3! Cute wins again. A.J. Melendez – not in the top 3. What in the world... Jordan McCoy – not in the top 3. Lucy Hale – not in the top 3! Taylor Thompson – is in the Top 3! Judges? Surprised? Deborah honestly (finally someone speaking their mind) says based on last night’s performances, she thought Morgan Burke would have been in the Top 3, but she is glad to see Taylor is there since she pulled off a song no one thought she could. Lamont says, looking at the three that are there, he can see what America saw, but he would have sworn that Danielle and Morgan would have been in the Top 3. (That was honest too! Lamont, you came through!) Mary says there will be some surprises, so just wait you guys. (What?) Now it’s time to go back to the couch for one of the Top 3. It is… Tori Thompson. You see from her reaction that she’s not used to losing! It was like the words had to coalesce in her head to make sense. Chantel and Taylor are left! But first there is Tamyra Gray doing “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” in her usual awesome fashion. I really love the sound of her voice! Can’t wait for the album! Ryan is ready to announce the first member of the band. It is... Taylor Thompson! Taylor gives a better performance of “Proud Mary” than she did last night! Okay, the dust has settled. I don’t understand these voting results either. I am as perplexed as the judges. None of the three best performances, in my opinion, were rewarded. Taylor was fine, and certainly deserving, but how anyone with ears can think she was better than Danielle or Lucy or Morgan last night, I just don’t get. It is a foregone conclusion now that Tori will get in too. I was hoping America would get it right. Sigh. Sting7 can be reached at stingseven@yahoo.com.
