Boarding House, Episode 4: It's All Good, Even When It's Bad

by Beth Blakely -- 07/11/2003
When you're a pro surfer, even when it's bad, it's all good. At least, that's what this week's episode of Boarding House teaches us. Find out who the losers are this week - and just how tough Holly Beck (right) can be when push comes to shove.

It's the morning of the Turtle Bay Resort Pro women's competition when this episode of Boarding House opens, and Holly Beck is focused on unloading the dishwasher. A seemingly disoriented (maybe from a hard night of partying) Veronica Kay is wandering from room to room. VK mumbles something in Holly's general direction about taking the black car and leaving. Holly seems not to hear her, but stares with displeasure out the kitchen window as VK drives away.

Holly heads to Chelsea's room to give her a wake-up call and to bitch about VK. She says she's given up on getting through to VK about her self-centered behavior. Good call, Holly. Now lighten up a bit and you'll be fine.

Holly and Chelsea talk about how nervous they are as they prepare for the competition. They're both looking forward to redeeming themselves after poor performances at Haleiwa.

Damien's Caught In Charlotte's Web

Damien leaves early for the airport to await the arrival of his longtime girlfriend Charlotte. They met two years ago and Damien is still madly in love. "It seems like she'd do anything for me," he says. But not anything... for we know from previous episodes and countless promos that Damien and his girl abstain from sex due to their Christian beliefs.

In voiceover, the couple talks about how Damien's lifestyle makes it tough to be apart all the time, but Charlotte says that their time together is so “amazing” that it's all worthwhile.

As they drive back to the house, Charlotte mentions that she's been looking at Catherine Zeta-Jones' 10+ karat diamond ring in an issue of US Weekly. "I want bigger than 5 karats," she comments to Damien. Let's hope you win some competitions, eh Damien?

Choppy Waters

Meanwhile, at the Turtle Bay Resort Pro, the women talk about the tough conditions they'll have to compete in. The waves are "not small, not big - just bad," according to Holly.

A zinc-covered VK enters the water for the first heat, along with Keala Kennelly, Melanie Bartels, and housemate Chelsea. For a short while, it looks as if VK will do well in the competition. She struggles for her first wave, but her second puts her in 2nd place for a bit. In the end, though, she comes in 4th and is eliminated. She can relax now, though, as her elimination means this was her final competition of the season. Chelsea fares a bit better in the choppy surf. She ends up in 2nd place and will go on to the final Triple Crown event in Maui.

In the next heat, Holly heads in for her 25 minutes in the water against Megan Abubo, Emmanuelle Joly-Thomas, and Neridah Falconer. Neridah is the Roxy Pro Champion, and she didn't get the title by accident. She's quite aggressive and is the first to catch a wave.

The Big Bad Paddle Battle

Holly struggles to catch one and as she finally is about to catch her first, Neridah is paddling alongside her going for the same wave. In voiceover, we hear Holly explain, "There's an unspoken rule that if you've had a wave, you don't paddle inside of someone."

Neridah didn't get that memo, apparently, because the two get into a bit of a tussle, or "paddle battle," and there's some physical contact with each other's boards as they struggle to gain the advantage. Both end up catching the wave at different points, but Holly's ride isn't enough to save her. When the horn sounds, she knows she's eliminated from the competition.

As the women exit the water, Holly paddles over to Neridah and they again engage in a yelling match. Neither is timid, and they're nearly touching as they speak loudly and directly in each other's faces. Holly keeps repeating, "We were in a paddle battle."

Later, back on the beach, Holly explains to friend Alissa Dragan that Neridah paddled inside of her to get the wave and claimed that Holly's board was beneath hers at one point. "She grabbed my board and pulled my leash," Holly says. "She claimed that I got underneath her [board] and she was pushing me out of the way." Holly tells Alissa that women surfers are "more catty - more vicious" than men. Ya think?

The Most Boring Couple In The World

Back at the house, sweet, sweet Charlotte and her "good boyfriend" Damien are settling down for a wholesome game of backgammon. Later, they take a walk on the beach and frolic in the surf. I guess they have to get their exercise in somehow to relieve a bit of tension. We learn that the two met two-and-a-half years ago when she worked for a surfboard company for which he used to ride. (What? No free promotion for that unnamed company? Color me shocked.)

It's A Girl!

Meanwhile, Myles and Chaney are off to deal with something Charlotte and Damien don't have to worry about. At their second ultrasound visit, they learn that their child will be a girl. (What would people named Myles and Chaney name their baby girl, do ya think? Perhaps one of those cute combo names like Chyles, Maney, or Chaley? We may never know.)

Through voiceover during the magical jelly-on-belly rubbing experience, we learn that Myles met Chaney at a friend's house on the beach. Myles says it was "love at first sight." He also says that the upcoming birth of the child has changed his view of his surfing career and that he feels the need to support the family. "I'm really fortunate to be a surfer," he says.
