American Juniors, July 16: Two For The Roadby Sting7 -- 07/17/2003
View Printable version of this article Last week, the nine remaining contestants sang for their spots in the band. What was most surprising was Chauncey’s stellar performance, while Tori Thompson and A.J. Melendez were without their usual sparkle. Of course, Tori’s sister Taylor is already in the band, and you don’t gotta be Kreskin to see she will get there eventually. Will it be tonight, when there were more deserving performers? I kinda predicted there would be a Top Three (and there was, that’s why I have this gig!), and I thought the Top Three should be: 1. Chauncey Matthews 2. Danielle White 3. Lucy Hale I also predicted the Top Three would be: 1. Tori Thompson 2. Chantel Kohl 3. Chauncey Matthews And the second member of the band would be: Tori Thompson Ryan welcomes us and tells us Brian McKnight will be performing! He introduces Taylor Thompson, looking a little lonely on the group bench all by herself. That will end tonight. Intro last week’s judges: Brian McKnight and Gladys Knight. Deborah Gibson is not with us tonight and Ryan wonders who he will flirt with. Certainly not Brian, he says. Heh. We get a recap of last week's performances, which you can read in detail here. The kids perform “United We Stand” and their voices blend well on the chorus, but the choreography is just dog-awful! Ryan says he will be calling the top three vote getters up. Now for the results: Katelyn Tarver - not in the top three A.J. Melendez - in the top three! Danielle White - not in the top three Tori Thompson - in the top three! Lucy Hale - not in the top three Morgan Burke - not in the top three Jordan McCoy - not in the top three That leaves Chauncey and Chantel! Chauncey is in the top three! (Two out of three this week!) Ryan says they are making special music videos and this week, Taylor is all alone singing “Cheeseburgers.” Words cannot describe how horrific it is. There are cheerleaders, singing cheeseburgers, and in the end, she is swallowed by a giant cheeseburger. I am not lying. David Bloomberg said, “That is the kind of video that, if Taylor ever becomes famous, she will have dragged up when she shows up at whomever Leno's successor is.“ Word. Brian McKnight performed a medley of “All Night Long” and “Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda” from his new album, U-Turn. The Matthews women are coming out of their skins over Brian, but I have heard him before much better! I wonder what Simon would say? Back to business, someone has to go back to the couch. It’s A.J. Melendez. One more makes the group. It is Tori Thompson. Chauncey gives her a gracious hug. Tori is too young to know this was a foregone conclusion. She is thrilled. I am annoyed. Poor Chauncey, he really deserved to make the group this week, and he got robbed over sentiment. It’s a crime. Next week, the competition really begins. The Thompson sisters are in, now we can start judging on merit. Can’t we? Please? Sting7 can be reached at stingseven@yahoo.com.
