Boarding House, Episode 6: Do You Love Me, Surfer Girl?

by Beth Blakely -- 07/25/2003
Holly is a hot mama. It seems she's got more cute boys than she knows what to do with during this last episode of Boarding House: North Shore. What will she do? Oh yeah, and who will take home the Triple Crown?

In this, our final episode of Boarding House: North Shore, we get the pleasure of watching the surfers wake up on Day 4 of the Pipeline Masters competition. Just seeing the bleary-eyed Danny struggle to a sitting position and wander around the house makes me glad nobody can see me in the morning. On the upside, the waves look clean and the gang prepares for a great day at Pipe.

The very pregnant Chaney is worried about Myles and has been having nightmares about his possible demise in the water. "What would I do if he died," she wonders. Myles response is philosophical: "If it's your time to go, there's no place I'd rather be than in the water," he says.

There are 32 surfers left in the Pipeline Masters competition. They'll be competing in four-man heats with 25 minutes in the water to strut their stuff. Myles is up in the first heat against Danny, Rob Machado, and Jamie O'Brien. Due to last week's perfect 10 score, Danny is the "one to watch."

Danny's first wave is a clean one, and he gets great position in the barrel. Myles answers with a barrel of his own, as do Rob and Jamie. It's a close heat, but with three minutes remaining Machado catches a great wave moving him ahead of Danny. Not one to be outdone, Danny moves into the barrel of a great wave. Unfortunately, the top of the wave clips him and he wipes out.

Then, as if Chaney's worst fears are coming true, Myles charges a big wave and is completely wiped out. The announcer scans the water and asks, "Where is Myles Padaca?" The Hawaiian Water Patrol is dispensed to check on him as a panicking Chaney looks on. Finally, Myles emerges heading toward shore on the ˝ board he's got left. The horn sounds, and it's bad news: Both Danny and Myles are eliminated from the competition.

Having won the Triple Crown last year and giving a less than stellar performance this year has given Myles a "hunger" to do well next year. He's gonna "keep on pluggin'," he says.

Danny isn't taking his loss so well. He looks frustrated and upset as he talks to a little boy on shore, possibly his nephew, about his performance. "Did you catch any good waves?" the boy asks. "Have you won the Triple Crown?" Danny shakes his head and laughs. Later he stands and shakes his head under a shower as if washing the stink of defeat from his bod.

It's All About Surfer Boys

A bunch of surfer girls, including Holly, head out to party. They wind up drinking and talking trash at a local restaurant and bar. Holly is checking out the guys and throwin' down the alcohol with the best of them. She says to another surfer girl, "I need to get some ass. I need to get some ass."

But later, she tells the camera that all the other girls are in the mindset of "hooking up," but that for her it's just "entertainment for the night." Besides, she says all the attention she gets is from stupid surfer boys who can't talk about anything but surfing. She really wants to connect with someone on a different level, she says. Yeah, Holly, we believe you. No, really, we do!

Jake The Snake and Changed Man Sunny Garcia

Jake Paterson, otherwise known as Jake the Snake, will compete with Sunny on Day five of the Pipeline competition. Sunny says that Jake is known to hassle – as is he – but "if the judges can't see what you're doing then it's fair game." Good thing you feel that way, Sunny.

Jake and Sunny will face Joel Parkinson and Paulo Moura in the water. Almost as soon as the heat begins, Jake and Sunny get into a paddle battle. Sunny is prepared to go right on the wave but Jake pretends he's going left. Sunny backs off and then Jake goes right. There's no interference call, but Sunny's supporters on the beach are a bit miffed at Jake's strategic work.

Sunny's no stranger to the game, and apparently anger helps his performance. He answers by taming a great wave complete with a total cover up. As he finishes the ride, Sunny gives Jake the "surfer salute." He places the fingers of his left hand in the crook of his right elbow while raising his right fist into the air. Chaney laughingly mirrors the gesture on the shore. Take that, Jake!

Next, Joel gets a great wave and steals the lead from Sunny. Then, Sunny and Jake get into another paddle battle and Jake snakes him again. At the end of the heat, Sunny is eliminated and hot under the collar. But to our surprise, Sunny doesn't chase Jake down the beach and beat him senseless. Instead, he says that he understands that Jake has a family and needs to do well. "Jake hassled me pretty bad," Sunny says, “but I’d like to think I'm changing.” Me too, Sunny.

Hot, Hot, Hot Holly

When Holly and friends were heading to the afternoon's competition, they spotted some good-looking guys on the side of the road. They flash pearly white smiles and head on over to Foodland for a few groceries, where they meet up with the fellows. When they get to the beach, guess who's there?

One of the guys, Justin – also known as "gorilla" – takes a liking to Holly. He learns of her summer digs, shows up at the house, and the two go for a swim, take a run down the beach and go to dinner. We think things are going really well until Holly tells us, "The more time I spent with him, the less cool he was."

Perhaps her dislike for him began to grow when he slipped in a "my girlfriend and I" comment at dinner. At least, that's the message she sends to her roommates when she tells them about her adventure with the potential hookup.
