Road Rules: South Pacific, Episode 13: If Only the Newest Cast Member Could Be Voted Off First!by Jen Shrader -- 08/27/2003
View Printable version of this article Previously: Marybeth and Dave bonded, then spent the night together in a tent. Tina didn't trust Marybeth and flirted with Dave to get on her nerves. And the group found out they were headed to Tahiti. The Winnie drives through Tahiti and Dave says the scenery is breathtaking. As the group motors along, Tina flirts with Dave and says even though he knows she's doing it just to upset Marybeth, he's "falling for her trap." Marybeth says Tina is insecure. Now it's time to review the individual skills everyone's been learning as they cram for the mission. Well, everyone crams but Donell, who announces he's going swimming, even though Christena orders him to study. His mission is puzzles and riddles. Tina's task is language fluency. She has to learn French, Spanish, and German. She keeps complaining about the short time she has trying to switch tasks with someone else. Marybeth says, "Hey, Attitude, you need to study!" I guess they won't be swapping. Tina meets a restaurant owner named Octave, who offers to take her to dinner and teach her French. She takes him up on the offer. At the next table, Christena practices her task, Morse code, with Chris. He spells out, "We are in deep doo doo." Later, Tina dances with Dave in front of Marybeth because she likes to make Marybeth mad. So Marybeth finds Octave and starts dancing with him. Pretty soon these girls are going to start marking their territory. Dave, allegedly, has no clue all this is going on, so Chris warns him. In the Winnie, we find out that Octave has asked Marybeth to dinner. Tina calls Marybeth a sleazy broad. She says she only went to dinner with the man for French lessons, and Marybeth just wants a free meal. OK, pot, the kettle will be over here when you're off your meds. Christena says some bloodshed is going to go down before all this man-swapping is over. On their date, Octave gives Marybeth jewelry, then they dance. And all Tina got was a French lesson. Marybeth talks to Dave and says Tina told her she thought she was sleazy for going out on the date. Marybeth is rightfully ticked off. She interviews that Tina's only been on the trip for a week and shouldn't be passing judgement on people. Meanwhile, Donell is back to not studying for the mission. He says he hates to study. Tina tries to swap missions with him, saying she doesn't even know English very well. That should boost everyone's confidence. Donell and Dave practice and Donell just guesses the answers. Dave says Donell has the attention span of a barnyard hen. Mission Day. Mayors Vaironi and Karl announce that the group has 2 1/2 hours, using various clues, to find their next tattoo piece. If they don't get it, someone goes home. Yeah, we got that part. The first clue is to find the highest point on an island that it’s possible to get to on a paved road. They have to drive the Winnie to that point. That's Dave's part of the mission, and he finds the point quite handily. This is the part of the mission that goes well. The next clue is written in three foreign languages, so it's Tina's turn. She gets one word of the first clue, then is stumped on the rest. A lot of good Octave did her, huh? The rest of the group can't help until at least 15 minutes go by, so they all stand and watch as Tina loses it. Dave finally cracks the clue, which is to go back to the beginning of the street. The next clue is Morse code, which Christena cracks with no problem. Heading left, down the hill, it's Donell's turn to figure out a riddle. In his defense, I don't think I would have been able to get it. It was several city names that were all in the same "family." Donell picks the wrong clue, and the group has to run to the Winnie to find it out, wasting time and energy. Donell himself is pretty tired at the moment and has to be helped up the hill. They finally get to the right spot and it's up to Marybeth to pick the lock. She's confident she can do it - she's practiced on this very type of lock - but she runs out of time. They lose. Someone has to go home. Marybeth says there aren't words to describe how bad it is to send someone home this close to the end. Chris says they should just do the vote and not do any "behind the back" stuff like last time. In that spirit, Tina (stupidly) decides to be blunt with Marybeth. She takes her aside and says her vote-off decision has come down to Donell and Marybeth. Stupid girl. Like the rest of the group would ever vote off Marybeth. Marybeth interviews that Tina's lucky she can't be voted off this time because she never would have lasted the trip from the first mission! The group votes to send Donell home and he actually takes it like a man. If Donell had been this calm and rational from the beginning, who knows what might have happened? Even Tina, in a moment of clarity, decides to vote Donell off and not rock the Marybeth boat any more than she has. Donell says he's proven to himself he can beat the odds. He calls his mom, then the group goes out to dinner and toasts him, then his tear-stained face drives away in a van. Next episode: The revolving Winnie door continues when Jeremy shows up. And it's time for a Road Rules face-off with the Campus Crawl kids! Jennifer Shrader traded in her boyfriend for a dog, who is always happy to see her, is properly housetrained, and doesn't drink all her liquor while she's taking a nap. She and her dog live in the Deep South, where she's a reporter for a community newspaper. Be sure to sign up for our e-mail update so you can stay informed about new articles on the site!
