Nashville Star Winner Nominated for Country Music Award

by Mike DeGeorge -- 08/27/2003
While many of the contestants of American Idol have had a difficult time convincing the industry that they are for real, the Country Music Association apparently has no such qualms about Nashville Star winner Buddy Jewell – as he has been nominated for an award!

Nashville Star winner Buddy Jewell impressed viewers of the show with his smooth vocals and easy grace. Now it appears that he has impressed many of his peers as well.

The Country Music Association is similar to the Academy of Motion Pictures, in that it is an organization made up of professionals who vote on the most prestigious annual awards in their field. On Tuesday, August 26, The Country Music Association announced their nominees for the 37th Annual CMA Awards. Buddy Jewell was one of five artists nominated for The Horizon Award – essentially the CMA equivalent of “Best New Artist.”

Buddy’s co-nominees are Gary Allen (“Tough Little Boys”), Joe Nichols (“The Impossible,” “Brokenheartsville”), Blake Shelton (“Austin”), and Darryl Worley (“Have You Forgotten?”).

Past nominees who did not win include such noteworthy artists as Shania Twain (1995 & 1996), Faith Hill (1995), Brooks & Dunn (1992), Alan Jackson (1990), Reba McEntire (1983), and Boxcar Willie (1981). Past winners include The Dixie Chicks (1998), Travis Tritt (1991), Garth Brooks (1990), and The Judds (1984). So, obviously, whether Buddy wins or not, he is in select company.

As an editorial aside, this writer is surprised that Buddy was not nominated for either Single of the Year (given to the singer) or Song of the Year (given to the songwriter) for “Help Pour Out the Rain/Lacey’s Song.” He would have certainly deserved either nomination. However, fans of Buddy’s know he will have many more chances for nominations in the future.

The 37th Country Music Association Awards will be presented live on CBS, Wednesday, November 5 at 8PM Eastern. Until then, make sure you have your copy of Buddy Jewell’s debut album if you don’t already. The official CMA website is at www.cmaawards.com.
