Big Brother 4: Some Meandering Thoughts on Reality

by Marjie Hodson -- 08/31/2003
Marjie has been watching BB since the first one, even hosting some contestant-related websites. She muses on where we are right now, and where the Big Brother series should be heading.

Jun is back from the MTV Awards and has stories to tell. The other HouseGuests (HGs) are hungry for any information so she remains the center of attention for a while. Then back to strategy.

Nominations are Sunday and Jun as Head of Household (HOH) must make her decision. There are so many mini alliances going on at this point it is difficult for anyone to get the knife out of their back. It appears, as I write this, that Jun will be nominating Alison and Robert. (To find out what did happen before Tuesday’s show, check out our Big Brother 4 Spoiler Page.)

This would seem like an unlikely move since she is supposedly in an alliance with Alison. Jun knows she can't beat Jee in the finals. Her telling of the situation to the girls is that will keep the boys from whining. Alison after all has the Golden Power of Veto (GPOV) this week and will simply take herself off the nomination block. This will then allow Jun to throw Jee up there. After all, her last alliance was with Jack and Erika. Or was it? Maybe it was with Alison? Or was it with Jee? Did she think she was still with the "stooges"? Is it possible she will then put Erika up? Gee, I don't have a clue.

If Jun doesn't put Jee up I personally think she should immediately be inducted into the Reality TV Hall of Shame. After all, why does she want Jee around. If he gets to the finals it is obvious he will take the 500K. Even though he has betrayed his alliance, the three stooges, all along, they will never know this since they aren't allowed to see his Diary Room (DR) entries. That was Danielle Reyes' downfall last year. Arnold Shapiro and Allison Grodner, show producers, are avoiding that debacle this year by sequestering the jury. They finally got it right, or so it seems.

The unfortunate part is they have sequestered the jury together. As each HG leaves and goes to the sequester house don't you believe they will take word of what has gone on to the others from their point of view? You would think. Do you think it possible the recently evicted HGs might actually lie to their fellow jury members!

The sequestered HGs are allowed to view parts of the television show but not see the live feeds. The viewers get to see the reactions of the sequestered HGs to the live show. Since what makes the television show is manipulated by CBS, do you think perhaps a nudge here or there might be happening to favor one HG over another?

So back to the final four, which I believe will be Alison, Erika, Jun, and Robert. The next HOH competition will likely be Alison, Erika, and Robert. Jun cannot compete since she is the previous HOH, and I think Jee will be gone. Now if you have been following the show at all you know Robert hasn't really won a thing without a little help from his friends. Then again, will CBS manipulate this competition to favor Robert? It seems that has been happening a great deal this year in the minds of the HGs. Real or not, you decide.

I could speculate at this point all the way to the end of the show. That I will save for another day. Suffice it to say you have your final four: Alison, Erika, Jun, and Robert.

Now let me get this off my chest. I have been watching Big Brother from its inception. I'm an avid feed watcher, a member of the now unable to fly Banner Bunch, and over the years have hosted several web sites. ChillTown, a Nicole Nilson fan site, and Banish Chiwhora, to name a few.

This year not one of the HGs has caused any real interest for me. It seems as each year passes the producers of Big Brother are "casting" the HGs rather than picking them from a group of "real people" who have submitted tapes. The X-Factor theme of this year's show placed Amanda, Jee, Justin, Michelle, and Robert in the house to compete for 500K because they once dated someone who applied for the show. In fact, the same may be true in Alison's case (as she has intimated she was recruited) so both Alison and Justin were given a spot. Erika I believe has an in since she it is rumored that she is dating someone from another Big Brother show. Someone six years her junior, a civil engineer, and was a second prize winner on BB. This may simply be a rumor so I will throw it out there as such.

With that said it appears the only people who actually applied to the show through the normal process would be Dana, Jack, Jun, Nate, Robert, and Scott. Of course, there may have been some "casting" of these six as well. What I am getting at is that we have a reality show that is so contrived this year that you have to wonder if it really falls into the reality show genre at all?

Finally I have never in my life heard such woman-bashing in my life. Do Jee and Robert have a problem or what! As Robert picks his nose and every other part of body, he rants "we should have gotten rid of these bitches." Jee rivals Eddie McGee (BB1 winner) in his use of the "F" word.

As Queen Latifah says in her number, "When You're Good to Mama" (Chicago), "...so what's the one conclusion I could bring this number to?" Arnold, if you are passing the baton to Allison Grodner and there is a Big Brother 5, keep it real.
