Big Brother 4: Why Jee Lost

Jee went from a position of power – supreme power, in fact – to being voted out of the game. It was quite a fall, and from the statements of some of the HouseGuests during his week as HOH, you’d think the answer to the question of “Why Jee Lost” would be obvious. It is, actually, obvious, but perhaps not for those reasons.

In the week before Jun became HOH, Jee was in charge. He won HOH. He took a deal that gave him the Power of Veto and also forced everybody else to eat PB&J while he could eat anything he wanted. He even won the luxury food competition and was treated to McDonalds for the week. It was Jee week in the Big Brother house.

Throughout the week, we heard the other HouseGuests whine that Jee had painted a big target on his back. After all, he won everything, he made them suffer, yadda yadda yadda. At the time, I pointed out in various articles that he already had that target on his back because he could beat any one of the remaining contestants in the final two!

Lo and behold, when Jun won HOH, she realized the same thing. She didn’t nominate Jee because he made her eat PB&J for a week. She didn’t nominate Jee because he won McDonalds burgers. She didn’t even nominate him because he was good at challenges overall. She nominated him because she knew damn well that there was no way she could beat him in the end.

Don’t get me wrong, Jun knew that Jee was always a definite threat to win challenges. He is the only person so far to be HOH twice on BB4 (not that the person he wanted to leave actually was voted out either time, mind you). But more importantly, he was a threat to win everything.

The same facts hold true when looking at why Alison and Erika voted Jee out. They weren’t concerned about him in the challenges or mad about eating PB&J. They just don’t want to face him at the very end.

Let’s look briefly at why they wouldn’t want to face him. If any of the three women had faced Jee at the end, Jee would automatically have the votes of the other two Stooges, Rob and Justin. Knowing Dana’s relationship with Justin, Jee probably would have had her vote as well (there is no doubt about it if he were up against Alison). That’s a probable three votes out of the seven available. He would only need one more to win.

If he were up against Alison or Jun, that one more might have come from Jack because both of those women betrayed the alliance. It might have come from Nathan, who was none too pleased about the way he was treated by those women. It might have come from one of the women, who must end up in the jury if they aren’t in the final two! Simply put, Jee had it made. And say what you will about Jun and Alison, neither of them is so stupid that she didn’t see that result a mile away.

So then, what could Jee have done to stick around? Well, he could have won the Veto. Other than that, nothing would have saved him. At this stage in the game, the players are focused on the end. And in the end, they sure as hell don’t want to be standing next to a nice guy who is one vote away from winning before the ballots are even cast. Jee was a threat alright – but not because he could win challenges. He was a threat to win the whole shebang. And that is why Jee lost.
