Big Brother 4, September 6 Live Feed Highlights: The Chain Gangby David Bloomberg -- 09/08/2003

The HouseGuests wake up and are almost immediately on an indoors lockdown as producers prepare for a luxury competition. After a while of sitting around and not doing much, Robert tells them that the luxury competition will blow away everything else. But first, they need to get into striped prison uniforms and head out to the backyard, which is similarly done up as a prison. Jun sees cages and fences and tubes in the backyard. Alison sees balls and chains.
The prize for the competition is a blimp ride over Los Angeles for two. The HouseGuests don’t sound terribly blown away by this. Alison talks about how other houses won cars. In fact, the reactions of the women is so bad that Big Brother has Rob read the instructions at least three times so they can get the appropriate cheers. “Reality TV,” eh? Not.
The competition involves the HouseGuests putting on their ball and chain, going through the pool, over a wall, through mud, through a pipe, over a gate, and press a button. The quickest two win the ride. Rob makes it in a minute and 58 seconds. Erika is done in 2:49 (though there appeared to be a problem with the button – the producers overrode the actual time of 3:06 that showed). From the comments of Alison and Jun, it’s clear that Erika took her sweet time on purpose. Jun does it in 1:20. And Alison wins with 1:02. So Alison and Jun will ride in the blimp Sunday.
But Rob wins the prize that everybody really wanted – America’s Choice. He gets a phone call from his daughter. His daughter cries while they’re on the phone and when he’s done, he heads straight to the HOH room to cuddle up with his teddy bear and also cries.
Later, Alison wonders to Jun how America can be in love with Robert. Jun astutely points out that Rob has a kid, that’s why.
On a more strategic note, Alison and Erika talk about the final HOH competition and guess it will be a two-parter like last year. The way they talk makes it sound like Alison expects Erika to still be around, meaning Alison would be keeping her. Not that this is really indicative of anything since Alison lies more often than she breathes.
Alison and Jun talk about last year’s group of HouseGuests (which, incidentally, you can revisit by ordering the BB3 DVD for 30% off on Amazon vs. what CBS charges). Not surprisingly, Alison liked Danielle the best and says she did all the dirty work while Lisa won just because her hands weren’t dirty.
Alison talks to Rob about who she should vote out. He tells her to try to put herself in the final two with each and figure out how the votes would come out. She does and says she ends up thinking that Jun is a threat and so maybe she has answered her own question. Rob tells her that he admires the way she’s played and he would vote fairly, and knows that Justin would as well. Near the end of the discussion, Alison asks him for an honest answer as to whether Erika was planning to vote her out if she hadn’t won the Veto. Rob lies and says she wasn’t.
A bit later, Alison talks to Erika and they talk about who Alison might vote out and if she should tell that person ahead of time or not. Erika says she won’t tell her who to take – she should take Jun along if she thinks that is the best strategic move. But at the same time, she says the relationship they have is genuine (although we’ve all seen that it really isn’t) and that she never tried to get Alison out of the house (which is also untrue).
Erika and Rob compare notes of their conversations. They both agree that it’s terrible that Alison won the Veto. Rob makes Erika promise she won’t take Alison to the finals, and Erika assures him that she won’t, even though everybody wants to be against Alison in the final two because they think they can beat her.
Meanwhile, Alison tells Jun all about her conversations and says that she knew Erika and Rob had an alliance since Week 2 (um, they didn’t). They call her a “bitch” about 80 times and talked about how Erika screwed them over (coming from the two who jumped alliances more times than we can count). They continue to slam her, saying she doesn’t need the money, she spent too much time watching the previous Big Brothers, she’s fake, she cares too much about what the live feed viewers think, etc.
In flashback to what seems ages ago, Jun, Erika, and Rob discuss Scott and the outbursts that led to his expulsion. Jun says the folks in the Diary Room asked her to explain genital warts to Alison and Michelle because they were freaking out that they were going to catch ‘em while Jun was older and more mature. All of them agree that the way those two girls reacted was ridiculous.
With that bedtime story, they head off to sleep.
