Joe Millionaire Sequel Fools International Women

by David Bloomberg -- 09/29/2003
We’ve been wondering since the end of Joe Millionaire how producers could do it again. What new twists would they use? Where would they find the women? Now we have our answers as we look ahead to The Next Joe Millionaire.

For months, viewers, critics, and fans of Joe Millionaire have been trying to figure out how producers could do it again. What new twist would they come up with to fool women now that the cat was out of the bag after the first Joe Millionaire?

Rumors swirled. One claimed that the newest show was shot at a dude ranch and that there were more than one man involved. Some of the men were straight, some gay, and the winning woman, if she picked a straight man, would get a million dollars. While it’s possible that some show like this might still be on the way, that is not what the second Joe Millionaire will be.

The big twist on the second Joe Millionaire will be… exactly the same as the first one.

But wait, how can that be?! Doesn’t every woman in America know by now not to be fooled by a reality dating show telling you that you’re competing for a millionaire? Yes. That’s why the producers went outside of America for this version, the full title of which is: The Next Joe Millionaire: An International Affair.

The show takes 14 women from Europe – presumably those who don’t have access to information about American TV – to an Italian villa. The pretend stakes are even higher this time as they are told the bachelor for whom they are all fighting is worth $80 million!

As before, the story is that he recently inherited the money and he wants to find love so he can share the wealth. In actuality, the bachelor is rodeo cowboy David Smith, who supposedly only earns $11 thousand a year.

Another thing that hasn’t changed is the butler. Paul Hogan will return, likely in an enlarged role that hopefully replaces the practically nonexistent “host” from the first season.

The first episode will air Monday, October 20, at 8/7 Central. Then, beginning the following week, it will air twice weekly – on both Mondays and Tuesdays at the same timeslot – to try to capture ratings for Fox during November sweeps (and plug the hole left by the non-return of American Juniors).

Can David Smith fool the ladies? Can he win their hearts? Can the show capture the ratings success of last season? I guess we’ll soon find out.
