Sorority Life 3, Episode 4: The Ghost Pledge

by Jen Shrader -- 10/12/2003
Michelle has learned to straighten up and fly right (somewhat anyway) and the pledging continues at the University of California. But is there trouble for another pledge on the horizon?

Previously, everyone fought with Michelle over her overuse of the Range Rover. And Meena didn't ever come to a pledge event because she's joined 1,000 dance teams, a softball team, and she has a boyfriend and a whole other life.

Night. Pledge house. Meena and Janelle go dancing. Meena says the club they went to is "wiggity whack," which was a term I thought went out with rolling your jeans. Anyway, I guess it means the club was boring, and Meena and Janelle make fun of the people dancing. Janelle says she loves Meena because whenever there's drama in the house, Meena brings them back down to earth. Meena says Janelle is crazy and hyper. So they're getting along.

The sisters, meanwhile, are having a meeting where they get to choose who their little sisters are. It's meant to sound like a big deal, but really, they just draw names out of a hat. Then the sisters buy gifts for their little sisters and tell them their big sisters will be revealed next week.

There's supposed to be some kind of hint in the gifts to tell the little sisters who their big sisters are. But Meena, who's barely bonded with anyone, has no idea who her big sister is and she's not even trying to guess.

The pledges head off to "Project Angel Food," where they prepare meals for AIDS patients and deliver them. While preparing the food, everyone gives Michelle crap about "stalking" her supposed big sister, Suyoung.

Michelle interviews she's learned to act better and compromise with her fellow pledges.

Now it's time for the big "Reveal" night for the big sisters, and the sorority better hope Trading Spaces isn't drafting a lawsuit right now. The sisters stand in groups of four and the pledges have to guess which one is their sister. Michelle guesses correctly that her big sis is Suyoung. Meena guesses wrong. Lynnise is her big sister and they're even wearing the same shirt. It's the only thing they have in common.

Lynnise isn't thrilled with her little sister and says she feels uncomfortable about it. She says she doesn't want someone to come in the sorority who doesn't want to give their all.

It's finally time for "Presents" night, where the pledges give gifts to other just-initiated pledges. Meena's going to miss the event because she has a performance and she'll miss the next week's events because she has to go to New York. She's been accepted to NYU and has been invited back to visit.

Val says Meena has missed all the functions (except of course the two she was just seen at, but no one mentions that). Val's upset that Meena hasn't made time for the sorority.

And speaking of miscreant pledges, Michelle has lost her pledge pin! The horror! Michelle reports she called Val and Val ordered her a new one and docked her 100 points.

A livid Val says she doesn't remember anyone in her pledge class losing their pin.

And Michelle's problems just keep coming. She was supposed to meet Val at 8:30 for coffee and she's an hour late. So Lynnise calls her. Since Lynnise has never called Michelle, Michelle thinks she wants to do something for her and tells her she's available, since she was supposed to meet Val and she's already late. The sisters and Val, who were all gathered together for this conversation, are livid. Michelle calls Val, who doesn't answer her phone, and Michelle finally shows up for coffee an hour late.

A snippy Val says, "Do you think I'd want to go now?" Michelle says she didn't think to call, and leaves, saying she's tired of getting in trouble.

Michelle and her big sis then go shopping and Suyoung says her little sis is having trouble right now. Suyoung says Michelle is younger and in college and when she's an active she'll learn how to act.

Meena leaves for her New York trip and almost forgets to take her bags with her. She says living in the house will help her get to know the actives, since they're always coming over. Way to be sociable.

Val says Meena's mounting absences are wearing on the sisters. She says she likes Meena as a person, but the person and the situation don't work together.

The sisters have a meeting and Meena is the topic. Lynnise says she feels like the sorority isn't Meena's priority. Meena apparently made the huge gaffe of not wearing her sister’s favorite color to an event. (Another event that's apparently not counted since the sisters keep saying she's missed all the events.)

Lynnise says she didn't work this hard to have someone come in and ruin it and apparently there's a big "secret" night coming up the next Friday and they don't want Meena to learn their secrets. If she even shows up.

Val admits she's worried about the morale of the pledges if they kick out Meena. In the history of the sorority they've never kicked out a pledge. It takes a unanimous vote of the sisters.

The sisters vote, and it's unanimous! They want Meena gone.

Next week: Meena asks for another chance and the pledges stand up for her.

Jennifer Shrader traded in her boyfriend for a dog, who is always happy to see her, is properly housetrained, and doesn't drink all her liquor while she's taking a nap. She and her dog live in the Deep South, where she's a reporter for a community newspaper.
