Sorority Life 3, Episode 6: Shopping for Sisterhood

by Jen Shrader -- 10/27/2003
Who will raise the ire of the sisters this week? Who will almost come to their senses about pledging? And who will win the award for “Most Annoying Voice EVER”? Read on to find out!

Previously, Meena was rather unceremoniously booted from the pledge class, and the pledge house. Janelle, distraught over the departure, considers depledging.

One of the sisters is on the phone with Janelle, asking if everyone is OK after the Meena situation. Janelle tells her no one is OK. The sister says she always fights for the pledge but “this Meena thing was too much.”

Janelle interviews that for the sisters to look past Meena’s heart is short-sighted.

Val says Janelle is having trouble and is at a low point in the pledging process. Janelle says she’s questioning the probability of her forming a sisterhood with these people. And she’s considering depledging.

Meena returns to the house and packs her crap. Sharifa says it really hit her that Meena was leaving when she saw her car full of stuff and her empty bed. Meena says she felt, for the past two weeks, like she had a family supporting her, as we relive those sisterly bonding moments. Janelle says she and Meena will definitely be friends after this.

The sisters call a meeting to announce that Monica will be moving into the pledge house. Several pledges are upset, since Monica and Michelle already are best friends. Carmen interviews she doesn’t like cliques in the house.

Michelle, who just can’t talk without whining, says she’s extremely excited Monica is moving in, they’ve been friends since last semester and already are like sisters.

Janelle’s cell phone rings and it’s her mom. Janelle whines that she wants to depledge because she has class, and work, and she’s the choreographer for SCN (which we’re about to find all about). MTV asks Janelle to use the phone in the house (probably so they can hear both sides of the conversation). Janelle misses her freedom.

SCN turns out to be Spring Culture Night. The pledges have to do a dance for the sisters, practicing every night. Now, where is Meena for this? The Friday night practice is mandatory and if they miss it, they will be docked points.

Michelle whine-interviews that she’s upset that practice is on the same night as Val’s birthday. Oh, please, she’s not even your sister yet and this is the same person you ditched for coffee, you freakin’ brown-noser. Sister Katia tells the girls they can still go to dinner with Val, they can just practice later.

At dinner, Michelle whines some more and says they should just reschedule the practice. Someone says this is a bad idea since there are 15 pledges and this is hard to coordinate to begin with. Janelle skips the birthday party to stay home and rechoreograph the end of the dance.

Sister Toya calls Katia and says several of the pledges want to stay at the dinner. Katia is upset that the pledges are using sisters against her.

At 10 p.m., the pledges finally leave to go practice and the sisters, and one random homeless woman, continue dancing.

But Katia’s at the pledge house and she’s pissed. She tells the pledges they need to grow up and not use her against the other sisters, since it makes them look childish. Practice is mandatory and if they don’t show up they will lose 75 points. The pledges apologize and Katia says, “Mean it!”

Another random sister calls Janelle to tell the group they have a mission. Janelle says they have about 10 missions a week and they’re hard to pull off. The sisters are given five grocery lists and have to go shopping for the sisters, then get the lists signed and time-stamped when the groceries are delivered. They have until midnight and will get 20 points if they complete the mission. The more pledges who deliver the groceries, the more points are possible.

The pledges decide to split up to do the shopping, then meet back at the pledge house so that everyone can be counted on the deliveries. But chaos ensues, for no real good reason. Janelle asks for the time to be extended to 12:30 since MTV won’t let them speed. As the pledges deliver the groceries, Michelle says she loves the mission and she’s having so much fun. Probably because they let her drive.

Sister Stacie says the mission is out of control, which they didn’t want to happen, but which they somehow seemed to expect. The pledges get done, an hour late and with no times on the receipts.

President Jen says the girls were given a time limit to make them work as a team. She says they almost ran an MTV crew over and can’t continue to blame MTV for every mission going wrong. The pledges don’t get any points for the mission.

Janelle finally decides to move out of the house, then decide later about depledging. She calls Val, who says the sisters will support her decision. Janelle says she’s been drained of everything and, “I miss me.” Aww.

At the sister house, the sisters hand out a piece of paper and tell the pledges to poke a hole every time a true statement is read. The statements are like, “I’ve been late to a meeting,” “I’ve lied to a sister,” “I’ve wanted to give up.” Your basic guilt trip questions. When the paper is opened, it’s a picture of all the sisters. They gave the sisters the picture to make them realize what they say affects everyone. Deep, these sisters. They warn the pledges there are only five more weeks and a unanimous vote is needed to cross over. Two sisters right now feel that no pledges should cross over.

Sharifa says all the pledges have been working double-time to show they want to be in the sorority. Then she says Janelle’s moving out was a good decision. It’ll make her focus on why she wants to pledge.

Janelle packs her car and says she’s made amazing friendships in the past five weeks. Carmen says she doesn’t know what would happen if they lost Janelle as a pledge, as she, Carmen, and Sharifa share one last hug in the street.

Next week: Carmen announces she went to an all-black school for five years so she “knows the attitude!” Then she realizes that was perhaps not the best thing to say as a pledge in a multicultural sorority.

Jennifer Shrader traded in her boyfriend for a dog, who is always happy to see her, is properly housetrained, and doesn't drink all her liquor while she's taking a nap. She and her dog live in the Deep South, where she's a reporter for a community newspaper.
