Sorority Life 3, Episode 7: Hey, Carmen, Did You Know You Pledged a "Multicultural" Sorority?

by Jen Shrader -- 11/01/2003
The pledging continues as Janelle is gone from the house, but Michelle can always find someone to whine about. This time though, it's another pledge whose mouth gets her in trouble.

Previously, Carmen has been dubbed "superpledge" by the sisters as she collects signatures from everyone, goes to all the events, and tells everyone what they want to hear. Janelle moves out of the house and Monica moves in, to the dirty looks of Carmen, who has a problem with cliques in the house.

Pledge house. It's dirty, apparently. Carmen says someone's eating her food, then points out on the counter things that attract bugs. She says she's sure they had a broom, somewhere. Salina says Carmen is hard to deal with sometimes.

But yeah, Michelle's little friend Monica has moved into the house! Monica says she hopes Michelle will be more at ease since the rest of the sisters hate her whiny ass and she dreads coming home every day. Well, she didn't say "whiny ass," but you know what I mean. Michelle says having Monica here will be great because, "Janelle was their life."

Monica says Carmen is always angry or worried about something in the house. This time, she's afraid she'll have to move to accommodate Monica's moving in. Because it's all about Carmen, ya know.

Monica hasn't been assigned a room yet but has quickly taken up space in Michelle's room.

"Why would they separate us?" says Michelle, who apparently can't speak without whining. "To get to know the other pledges!" she jokes.

Salina and Carmen are studying and Carmen is annoying the hell out of Salina. It's kind of like that episode of The Simpsons where Bart and Lisa just keep repeating, "Can we go to Itchy and Scratchy Land?" "Can we go to Itchy and Scratchy Land?" "Can we go to Itchy and Scratchy Land?" "Can we go to Itchy and Scratchy Land?"

Upstairs, Monica marks her territory by writing her name on Michelle's arm.

But Carmen tells Monica that a sister told her she and Michelle will be deducted points if they keep hanging out together. It takes about two seconds for Monica, the brains of the duo, to figure out this is probably bulls**t.

Carmen, meanwhile, still isn't letting Sharifa and Salina study. Sharifa says Carmen is loud and disruptive and only quiet when she wants it quiet. Salina says she's going to approach the sisters about Carmen.

At the sister house, she and Stacie talk about the situation. No one's name is ever mentioned, but the sisters say they understand the problem. Stacie says she wants to tell the pledges to stop complaining.

Salina says she thinks its better off for her not to make the situation worse by saying anything. She says it'll have to be racial for her to get angry. Well, get ready, sweetie, it's coming. The sisters say they will talk to Carmen.

But not before a random "social" event with a fraternity, a water balloon fight.

Monica and Michelle talk on the beach about what Carmen said. Michelle's wearing one of those "Blossom" hats, making me hate her that much more. They agree to ask Stacie if what Carmen said is true.

Stacie says the pledges should be forming bonds but no active sister would deduct points without talking to them first. So basically, Carmen was a liar.

The pledges all go out to dinner with Jessica and Carmen shows up late. She's annoying the wait staff and the sisters, and finally says she spent 10 years in a black school so "she knows the attitude." If that wasn't embarrassing enough, the pledges say Carmen is the loudest pledge. (Surprise.) Carmen says she's ethnic and if she were white, she'd be quieter. Jessica tells Carmen that's racist, but Carmen doesn't seem to think it is. Jessica says that's not the kind of comment they want to hear coming out of the mouth of a Zeta sister.

So the sisters finally talk to Carmen, but it doesn't seem to do much good. Carmen says the pledges do things to annoy her too but she doesn't say anything. Lynnise says she understands Carmen is hurt, but she doesn't realize how she's acting.

At the house, Carmen complains some more to the sisters and says she can't be herself. Then Salina asks to borrow someone's mascara and Carmen says, "What for, with your beady little eyes."

Rut-ro.

Salina leaves the room, not wanting to confront Carmen right away. She finds Val online on the computer, however, and asks her for advice about how to deal with it. Carmen is immediately summoned to the sister house. Val, Stacie, and even President Jen are there to ride herd on their pledge. Val says the remark was unacceptable and it offended everyone. Carmen doesn't remember saying it (or so she says). Then she says it was all in good fun. Val says it can't be in good fun if someone was offended. Val interviews she knows Carmen isn't malicious, she just needs to "grow" from these little talks. Jen says you have to tell Carmen things over and over before she can process them.

Back at the pledge house, Carmen goes to Salina in tears. She's mad Salina didn't come to her directly. Salina says she was just asking Val's advice and didn't want to immediately go off on her. Carmen cries and says she's not a racist person. Then she throws her own pity party, saying the sisters want her to change and not say anything argumentative and she just shouldn't talk anymore and her whole life she hasn't been good enough and someone broke her rocking horse when she was two, and on and on and on. Well, not the rocking horse, but she may as well have said it. Carmen says she questions why she's even here.

Next week: The pledges manage to piss off Katina again and Carmen misses an event because she broke up with her boyfriend. An unnamed person is heard muttering, "It's always some excuse." Hee!

Jennifer Shrader traded in her boyfriend for a dog, who is always happy to see her, is properly housetrained, and doesn't drink all her liquor while she's taking a nap. She and her dog live in the Deep South, where she's a reporter for a community newspaper.
