Survivor: Pearl Islands, Episode 7 MVPs – Let’s Try Something Different

by Phil Kural -- 11/06/2003
Although this is the MVP column, Phil has changed things up a bit. Here he takes a look at which of the Outcasts might become an MVP by making it back into the game.

After what went on this episode on Survivor, I decided that it would be a little too hard to choose who the MVPs would be for each tribe. I based this decision mostly on the fact that we didn’t get to see too much of the tribe dynamics this week, especially concerning challenges, which is mostly what I base my decision on for MVP. There seemed to be too much squabbling over on Drake this week, and Osten made it pretty easy for Morgan to figure out who was going. All in all, I really had nothing to work with except for the cage challenge, which also didn’t give me much to work with, and tribal council, which for one reason or another just shed light on virtually nothing.

Well, I know by now you must be asking yourself what I would possibly write about. I didn’t want to say nothing because I do have an opinion. However, it is not about MVPs, it is about the Outcast Tribe. I’ve decided to take a look at the six members of the Outcasts and figure out which two deserve to be voted back into the game – you might say the two potential MVPs of the Outcasts. To make it easier, we’ll examine each one individually, as they were eliminated, and mark the pros and cons as to why they should and shouldn’t be voted back into the game. Then, after analyzing that, it should be obvious which two should be given a second shot – at least I hope it’s obvious. First, let’s look at Nicole!

Nicole – Nicole didn’t even realize that she made the biggest mistake of her life when she suggested that they vote of Tijuana to Lill. It came back to haunt her when she found out that Tijuana got wind of it and made it quite clear that the tables would be turned. Nicole found herself taking the biggest dive when she went from a position where she would not be getting any votes to everyone voting unanimously to have her torch snuffed. Was it the right thing to do at the time? I still don’t think so. Even though she was a little mouthy, I think they should have gotten rid of Skinny Ryan first, only because I think he was the weakest link. I think Nicole deserves a second chance because it wasn’t really herself that got her eliminated, it was Lill going to Andrew and spilling the beans, which I don’t condemn on Lill’s part because she was just making sure that she wouldn’t be the one to go. However, I don’t think she should be voted back into the game simply because she was the first one eliminated and the most removed from the game at this point. I’m sure the Morgan tribe doesn’t want her back, especially Tijuana, so she has that working against her as well if she is permitted back into the game. Do I think she’s getting back in? Nope.

Skinny Ryan – Okay, I understand that Ryan is a big fan of the game, and I commend that. Actually, I think it’s better when people who know the game as well as Ryan does play it, rather than those that claimed they never watched it because I simply think they are lying. Although Ryan says he tried his hardest and gave 110%, his tribe still voted him out, with the exception of Lill. When they voted him out though, I think it was the right decision. In the six days he was there it already looked like things were taking a toll on him. I don’t think that physically, he was up to par with anyone else on the team. Just like Mitchell from Survivor 2, I think his height played against him, making him wither away faster than the others. He was clearly the weakest link on the tribe and that showed in the challenges. It would not be a good idea for him to go back into the game because I think the same thing will happen and he will just weaken quickly and be voted out rather fast, just for the fact that nobody would want to watch it happen. I liked Ryan, but I don’t think he is physically fit for this game, nor do I think he should be voted back into it.

Lillian – Lill was voted out of the tribe because she was the odd woman out when it came time to face tribal council, where they decided to keep Darrah, who they say competed better in the challenges, rather than Lill, who had a better work ethic. I still think that Lill was better at the challenges but Andrew was the appointed leader and he decided it was time for Lill to go. Anyway, I do feel that Lill has every right to get back into the game. She is a very hard worker, dedicated to the tribe, and pulls her weight in challenges. I don’t think the Morgan tribe would like her to get back into the game because I’m sure they feel that she is out for revenge on them, which I think she has every right to be. The others may feel a little sympathy for Lill and vote her in because she is an older woman and has proved herself to be a tough worker. I definitely think she has a good shot at getting back into this game.
