“I Absolutely Think It Was the Right Move”: An Interview with Survivor’s Trishby David Bloomberg -- 11/04/2003

Shortly after she was voted out of Drake, but before the twist was revealed, RealityNewsOnline had a chance to ask some questions of Trish. RealityNewsOnline: Hello, Trish, and thanks for taking the time to answer these questions from RealityNewsOnline! Starting at the beginning, what was your original strategy for Survivor, how did you prepare for the game, and how did that all change when you were told to go overboard without any of your stuff? Trish: My original strategy was to go along to get along, but not go under the radar. I spoke up when I felt passionate about something and kept my mouth shut when I really didn't care. I was shocked when we had to jump off the ship with the clothes on our backs, but that did not impact my strategy or how I played the game. After all they're just clothes. RNO: Other than Rupert's speeches at Tribal Council, was there any fallout among the tribe members about Drake's decision to throw the challenge? Trish: None at all. We all made that decision, including Rupert. He was all for throwing the challenge to get Burton off because he felt threatened by Burton. We were all surprised that Rupert made those comments about throwing the challenge and felt they were made more for the cameras than for what really happened. RNO: Hindsight being 20/20, do you now wish you hadn't thrown the challenge just to get rid of Burton? Trish: I was a proponent to throw the challenge to get Shawn off. No one trusted that Shawn, Burton, and Michelle wouldn't go to Morgan once we merged because they started to realize they weren't in our alliance. As I said, Rupert picked Burton over Shawn. RNO: Friendships and some frayed emotions obviously formed among the Drake tribe before you ever had to vote anybody off. Considering that previous Drake players told us in earlier interviews that Rupert spent a lot of time with Sandra and Christa, why did you think that Sandra would go along with your plan to get rid of Rupert rather than just turning on you as she obviously did? Trish: Actually Rupert, Christa, and I were the closest alliance from the beginning. Sandra was sort of the last to join. So I had no reason not to trust them. Also, I opened up the discussion about Rupert, but was not prepared to vote him off necessarily. Everyone had their own reasons for getting rid of Rupert, including Sandra and Christa, so I didn't feel threatened at all. Also, Sandra and Christa always said they would never go down to the final two with Rupert. RNO: Do you still think it was the right move to try to get Rupert out then, or, in hindsight, do you think you should have waited for a better moment? Trish: I absolutely think it was the right move because we thought the merge was about to happen. Everyone felt threatened by Rupert's relationships with the Morgans. If Sandra and Christa were really thinking about playing the game and not about friendship they never would have voted against me. RNO: Why do you think the plan to get rid of Rupert failed – is there anything you think you could have done differently so it would have worked? Trish: The plan failed because we asked Christa what she thought about voting Rupert out and then we told Shawn he was saved. The combination of the two of them buckling was the downfall. If Jon, Sandra, and I were the only ones that decided the plan would have succeeded. View Printable version of this article |
