Sorority Life 3, Episode 10: Crossing Over… Or Not

by Jen Shrader -- 11/25/2003
It's the final week and the final votes are being cast, as we all come together as sisters and learn the true meaning of togetherness and sisterhood and... oh, who the hell are we kidding? Let's vote!

There's no "previously" this week, since I was a little late getting home and missed taping the first few minutes of the show. But since it's the finale, you can imagine, we don't need to relive the whole series. And my good friend Sting7 tells me that it was just one big, long, "previously" and nothing of any substance happened until we get to the dress shopping, which is where I started taping.

The girls are all dress shopping for "install" night. Carmen thinks it's a bunch of crap that no one knows if they're in the sorority yet, but they all have to shop for a dress, so she doesn't get one. Then, they all go shoe shopping and leave the store in a mess.

The girls talk about their upcoming final interviews. Monica says she's nervous. Sharifa says she's unsure what the sisters will ask.

Sister Stacie says the sisters don't want answers that are just what the sisters want to hear, they want heartfelt answers.

The girls are interviewed one by one. They ask Sharifa what she would do if a sister didn't cross. Sharifa says she'd probably cry because that's what she always does. But there's probably a reason for it and she'll have to accept it.

Salina is asked why she's a good sister. She says she's loyal and stands behind people she cares about. Monica is asked if she has anything she would do differently. She says she would've spoken her mind more and gotten to know the actives better. Brownnoser.

Janelle is asked what leadership skills she has besides leading the choreography and dance. She says she thought that was leadership. Good for her!

Val asks Carmen: When you get mad, you tend to do mean things. Will this continue? Carmen doesn't really answer, but says it won't be an issue and she's been trying to show the sisters that but they haven't seen it. After her interview, she feels attacked and says the sisters have never understood where she was coming from and there's nothing else she can do.

Now it's Michelle's turn. The first question is about her paragraphs. First she says it's the way she felt, then she says she didn't mean it.

The sisters aren't impressed. They say she skirts around the issue and negativity isn't something they need.

On Tuesday, the pledges have their final meeting. All the girls have surpassed 2003 points. God knows what Monica and Michelle had to do to get that done. They're told to gather at the pledge house Thursday night and wait for a phone call. After all this they do it by phone. That's sisterhood.

Wednesday, the sisters gather for the vote. About Janelle, Stacie says she's cute and bubbly, but she wonders what else is there. Ouch. They say Michelle is starting to show progress. Then talk turns to Carmen. Val wonders what will happen if she crosses over.

At the house, the pledges talk about how they will react if they don't get in. Michelle says she would cry. Monica says she'll be pissed.

The sisters count the votes and Val explains that a sister can "abstain" or give up her vote if she doesn't want to vote no. Twenty-two ballots are cast.

At the pledge house, Janelle says she's not excited but scared. Carmen says if she gets in and a couple of her sisters don't she'll say she doesn't want to join, because them not getting in would be unfair.

Salina is first to get the call: 22 yes. Janelle is next: 13 yes, 9 abstain. Sharifa says she's happy for Janelle.

Then we get to see all the pledges we didn't meet all season. Incidentally, most of them pass unanimously. Monica's included in this group, she gets in with 19 yeses and three abstentions.

Michelle, who looks like she's suffering from a major stress breakout, says her chances are iffy right now. Val calls her and says if she gets a dress, she can cross. The vote is 15 yes, 7 abstain. She's "relieved."

Sharifa is next but her crossing is a mission. She has to call the cell phone back of the girl who just called her. Luckily, it was her big sister Natasha. She passes with 19 yes, 7 abstain.

Last to go is Carmen. She finally gets the call. Val makes her sit down and she gets off speakerphone. She tells her it was a hard decision, but they don't think it will work for her to cross. The vote was 11 yes, 4 no and 7 abstain.

Janelle cries to the cameras not to follow Carmen as she goes upstairs and gets her stuff to leave. Sharifa says the whole thing was f***ed up and she wonders why they prolonged it if they weren't going to let her in.

Janelle says Carmen is hurt, angry, frustrated, and embarrassed, all things she would be if it would've happened to her. Carmen leaves the house and the pledges walk her to her car.

The next night, Carmen calls Jen. She says she feels disrespected. Jen says she didn't know what to say but she was upset that Carmen felt the sisters gave her no chance. She says if Carmen had had no chance they wouldn't have spent so much time talking about her. Carmen says she thought the sorority was different and that's why she pledged. Then she hangs up and that's the end of Carmen. Thank God.

Michelle and Monica go dress shopping, just hours before the big "install" and Michelle gets her dress approved.

Val says she's excited pledging is over. No more late night meetings, no more phone calls, she needs a break.

The pledges all show up at the hotel in almost identical white dresses. Michelle interviews she worked hard and put in her time and "changed her whole personality" to get in the sorority just so she could be accepted. Thanks for boiling down the whole sorority concept, there, sweetie. At a special ceremony, the pledges take off their pins and get their letters. As the camera pans from new sister to new sister, in their almost identical white dresses, Janelle interviews that this sorority exemplifies diversity like no other. I'd hate to see what the other sororities are doing, then.

At the end of the precious ceremony, when the sisters are about to cross over and all their hard work is done, Michelle says "I want to party already."

Then they all dance.

Jennifer Shrader traded in her boyfriend for a dog, who is always happy to see her, is properly housetrained, and doesn't drink all her liquor while she's taking a nap. She and her dog live in the Deep South, where she's a reporter for a community newspaper.
