Judge Says Bachelor Bob Can Sell CD

by David Bloomberg -- 12/30/2003
Producers of The Bachelor took Bob Guiney to court in an attempt to stop him from promoting his CD. However, a judge sided with Bob yesterday. Read on for details.

As reported here last week, producers of The Bachelor had sued the most recent guy to wear that hat, Bob Guiney. Bob had been promoting his new album, 3 Sides, and the producers were upset because they felt that the contract they had with him limited him to only promoting what they wanted promoted.

Unfortunately for the producers, a judge did not agree.

The judge ruled yesterday that producers could not block the sales of 3 Sides, as they requested. It is not clear at this point if the ruling addresses only blocking of the album or if it is the final say in the matter – the producers had also sought monetary damages. I find it hard to believe it is the latter since nothing is ever concluded that quickly in the legal realm, but even if it isn’t, it certainly is a bad sign for the overall case.

In Bob’s defense, his lawyer pointed out that he has had three previous albums with his group, Fat Amy, and that his musical career of a dozen years should not be brought to a halt just because he was on The Bachelor. He further said that the exclusivity clause Bob was accused of violating only applied to work on television, not using television to promote his album. His attorney said the case never should have been brought and called it “ridiculous” that the producers would do such a thing to Bob.

The album is currently available via Amazon.com only (see below for link). However, there are plans for it to become more widely available, and these plans can go forward now that the judge dealt what amounts to a death blow to the case. There is no word on if the producers will appeal, but it seems unlikely.

In discussing the case, other outlets have continued to report that Bob and Estella are rumored to have split up, but there has not been any further official word on the subject other than Bob’s denials a couple weeks ago.

Now that we know the CD is “legal,” you can buy it through Amazon.com:
