“Average Joe” Runner-Up Adam to Star in His Own Dating Showby David Bloomberg -- 01/15/2004
View Printable version of this article The finale for the original Average Joe “won” the award for “Worst Finale” in the 2003 Reality TV Hall of Shame Year in Review Awards because viewers were so upset that Adam Mesh, the last remaining “Average Joe,” lost out to pretty boy Jason. Indeed, after I interviewed Average Joe’s Adam Mesh and he didn’t win, I received a mailbox full of e-mails from people who wanted to set up their daughters/friends/selves with him. I wasn’t the only one as Adam himself and NBC were also hit with similar requests. I even received e-mails from people who suggested that Adam should be the next Bachelor, perhaps forgetting that it is on a different network. However, somebody at NBC had the same idea anyway. Now Adam will be the star of his own reality dating show, and will even have his name featured in it – a first for reality dating shows as far as I can tell – Average Joe: Adam Returns. The show will begin on the heels of the finale for Average Joe 2, premiering Monday, March 15. Unfortunately, that’s about all we know at this time. NBC entertainment chief Jeff Zucker has mentioned that the “Average Joe” concept could work for women as well, but didn’t specifically say that was what would happen here. He did, however, note that the women fighting over Adam will be a combination of “gorgeous” and “not gorgeous.” Will they start out all non-gorgeous and then have the gorgeous invade, like on Average Joe? We don’t know, but if I had to speculate, I’d say no – it’s too obvious. Just as the producers sprung surprises on Melana and Larissa, they will probably want some for Adam as well. And, of course, any women on the show should be prepared for twists as well. This will be interesting, as Adam himself told me in our second interview that he didn’t really want to date women who already felt they knew him when he didn’t know them. “It’s weird to go out with someone who likes you before you have ever even spoken to them,” he said. Furthermore, he said on the Today show that he was already dating somebody. When I asked him about that in the second interview, he said they were “casually dating” and that he wasn’t going out on other dates but it wasn’t a serious relationship at that point. I guess he will be going out on other dates after all! David Bloomberg is the Editor of RealityNewsOnline and can be reached at RNO@pobox.com.
