American Idol 3, February 11: The Great Eightby Sting7 -- 02/12/2004

Ryan welcomes us to the first results show of American Idol 3! He says he holds in his “expensively manicured hands” the results of last night’s performances.
We greet the judges; Ryan says Simon won a lifetime Grammy for wearing the same shirt, introduces Paula Abdul as a Grammy winner (I think for choreography), and the rapidly shrinking Randy Jackson. Ryan asks Randy if he’s noticed that as he shrinks, Simon expands? Simon answers, “much like your head.”
Ryan awkwardly skitters away from that and introduces the contestants. The Friends and Family of the contestants are jittering in the red room. Ryan says there were 11.5 million votes cast!
We get the obligatory recap of last night, which you can read about in detail right here.
Ryan chats briefly with some the contestants. Marque Lynche says his mother cried when he sang last night, but wished he’d sang another song (another reason why you should always listen to your mama!). Katie says she values the judges’ opinions, but she has to sing what she feels. Fantasia says she would marry Simon, she finds him attractive!
The judges make their predictions on which two of the talented folks is heading for the Top 12:
Randy predicts Diana and Fantasia.
Paula predicts Diana and Fantasia.
Simon predicts Fantasia and Diana.
Now it’s time to for the Top 3 vote getters to sit on those ergonomically-challenged stools!
Marque Lynche - not in the Top 3.
Ashley Thomas - not in the Top 3.
Fantasia Barrino - Top 3!
Erskine Walcott - not in the Top 3.
Diana Degarmo - Top 3!
Katie Webber - not in the Top 3.
That leaves Matthew and Jennifer. My gut says Jennifer’s rich power voice, because Matthew had many flaws, but man, he does light up a camera! Which would win out?
Ryan stumbles through the announcement, “Jennifer, Matthew is in the Top 3.” Jennifer looks a bit confused, Matthew looks like he followed every half-syllable and was out of his chair like he was afraid someone would change their minds!
Since none of the judges predicted him, Ryan asks what they thought Matt was missing. Simon says he watched the performance again and thinks a lot of girls will fall in love with him. Paula says he very charismatic and she’s not surprised at all. Randy repeats that he didn’t think Matt was vocally strong enough, just not feeling it. (I gotta agree, but I also said charisma can cure a multitude of sins. It apparently did!)
So, that means five talented folks are out. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Erskine and Jennifer as wildcards! This is hard. I really liked four out the five that are done! It’s gonna be that kinda season, folks!
Ryan says it’s time to put “one of the contestants out of their misery.” Fantasia is the higher vote getter with 23.2% of the vote! (I like that the percentages are revealed!) She sings a joyful “Something to Talk About.”
The next person advancing is... wait, let’s meet Group 2! Performing next week: Lisa Leuschner (Wow, she looks great! She really cleaned up during the off months!), Kara Master, Briana Ramirez-Rial (she used to be Briana Garcia! Yes, the name changes have begun!), Matthew Rogers, Jesus Roman, Noel Roman, Marisa Joy (she dropped her last name – they are killing me!), and Camile Velasco.
Okay, the next person in the finals is Diana Degarmo! She’s whooping for joy! Then Ryan stupidly asks what the wait is like. She says it’s crazy. Ryan asks what the day is like. Diana says you try to be confident, but you never know! She is the youngest competitor in the Top 32 at a mere 16 years old!
Diana gives a confident “I Got the Music In Me.” Lord, I hate this song.
Okay, one out of two. And I bet Fantasia won by a large margin. Whew! This season is gonna be tough! Matt Metzger got oh-so-close. I told you I wouldn’t be surprised if he did well, if he were actually in key, he would probably have edged out Diana!
Next week, Group 2, with both Roman brothers, fan-favorites Matt Rogers and Briana Ramirez-Rial, and a Click to Pick in Camile Velasco. My immediate gut says Briana and Camile, we’ll see if that changes after they perform. Prepare for another teeth-gnashing night of performances! I’ll be there! See ya later!
