High School Reunion 2, Episode 4: Don't Worry About Lenny, He's with the Blond Ones Now

by Kara Wild -- 04/05/04
As always there are several major plotlines this week. Will Johnny and LouAnn finally do something? What will Lenny look like after a makeover? And will Heather and Denise continue griping about each other? (Well, okay, that one’s a given.)

The WB urges us to "Catch a fresh new High School Reunion!" What is the network's recent preoccupation with "fresh"? What's wrong with just plain "new"? Why, because other networks have new shows, but only WB gives shows that piney fresh scent that lasts all day! That'll definitely make me switch channels from Survivor to Steve Harvey.

Anyway, last week: Denise pined for Gabe, Heather F. pined for Gabe, Gabe pined for a state that allowed bigamy. Lenny struggled to fit in. Trevor and Amanda had sparks. Johnny and LouAnn had feelings for each other after all these years! Will they give in to temptation?! Will Lenny gain acceptance?! Will Heather win Gabe back with the infamous topless swimming maneuver?!

I must say, I like the opening credits. They somehow manage to make everyone look dashing, even the people who have been under the radar until now.

Denise reiterates that she came to the reunion hoping to reconnect with Gabe, and thinks it has brought them closer together. She and Gabe would like to be able to focus on just themselves, but can't because of Heather F. Denise mutters and curses, then appropriately snarks, "Get over it, here's the name of the therapist." Heather, meanwhile, thinks the Hall Pass in the last episode opened a lot of doors with Gabe. She feels like the whole situation is a replay of their situation in high school – that Denise wants control over something she doesn't have control over.

We now switch gears to Lenny, who walks through the yard in a goofy shower cap. Hi, Lenny! C'mon, let that hair flow! Lenny remarks that he felt like a geek in high school. Laura remarks that Lenny has no confidence, and she decides to be his best bud ("Sorry I ignored you in high school!") and give him that ray of hope. Lenny sits down with her and confesses that he has a boring job and girlfriend problems, and within three minutes, Laura can see deeply into his soul. She knows what Lenny needs – a complete change, and Laura will be the one to make it happen!

LouAnn goes into Johnny's room and wakes him up. Oooh… he's bare-chested. LouAnn feels like she has an angel and a devil on her shoulders, one telling her to stay with her boyfriend, the other to try with Johnny. LouAnn feels like she needs more time with Johnny, while he feels a spark and a "connection" with her. At the beach, they lounge close together on a big towel.

Lenny gets a Hall Pass, and the girls around him gush, the way you'd gush if your dorky younger brother were going out on his first date to the local IHOP. Some of the girls I don't recognize. Oh, wait, there's Jessica. Hi, Jessica! Nice to see you! Laura and Jessica take Lenny into town to get him a "huge, shocking makeover." Git yerself a haircut, son!

Will LouAnn give in to temptation? If the teasers go as usual, we won't find out until after a couple more commercial breaks.

The show comes back from commercial break with gorgeous shots of Hawaii… but that almost goes without saying, like the fact that Antarctica is cold. Time for more Trev-bore and Amanda. Amanda reiterates that they were both shy sideliners in high school, but now sparks are a-flying! They want some more action, Hall Pass or no. Amanda says she never expected to find romance in Hawaii. That's like saying you never expected to find pubs in Ireland.

During Lenny's Hall Pass preparations, Laura and Jessica fuss over Lenny and decide that he needs a haircut, his hair lightened (oooh, blond streaks!), and his facial hair removed. Damn it, why don't you just strip Lenny of everything that makes him unique? Lenny doesn't seem to mind though. He laps up their attention like a neglected puppy.

Heather F. and Gabe talk in the kitchen. Gabe then sees Denise take a seat in the living room and decides to split. Heather fumes that Gabe can't "openly care" about her with Denise around, but she won't back off.

Fast forward: Len-bot's makeover is through, and he looks like a slightly geekier version of the other men at the reunion, crewcut and all. I guess if that's the look he wants, that's okay, but damn – I would have loved you just as you were, Lenny.

The girls then take Lenny clothes shopping and buy him a preppy shirt and pants. One of us, one of us...

Meanwhile LouAnn and Johnny talk in their living room, looking out at the beach. LouAnn struggles to consider what would make her happy – the security that Brad her boyfriend provides, or Johnny, who makes her "heart melt." LouAnn wishes she could throw caution to the wind. She and Johnny both look tired, and LouAnn snuggles up against him.

We come back from commercial with a lovely shot of the water. Just for once, I wonder what it would be like to see a compost pile or something that isn't breathtakingly beautiful.

Lenny's SUV returns! The reunion attendees all gather around and chant his name, though God knows why they would be so excited if they were ignoring him before. Lenny steps out, and everyone freaks because his hair is short for the first time in memory. Stacy gushes that he "looks sooo good!" According to Laura, Lenny's makeover steps him up "ten levels" – he has this confidence he didn't have before. Well yeah, because people are complimenting him when they weren't before. That doesn't necessarily mean Lenny himself likes the change – he just knows that others do.
