Forever Eden, April 16: The Change-Upby William Ingram -- 04/22/2004
View Printable version of this article “(pop) It's gone and you can tell that one goodbye!” -- John Fogerty, 1985 Well, it looks like Fox has added a whole batch of new twists to this game. First off, they apparently have gotten rid of the 11 original players and replaced them with 18 real swingers. Unfortunately, all the players are now male and there doesn’t seem to be any romantic involvement between the players. The game is still played on a lush lawn of fresh fauna, however. And, instead of playing in the humid tropics of Jamaica, they’ve moved the game to an undisclosed location on the east coast of the United States. I caught hints that it might be somewhere in Massachusetts. And, instead of filming the game several months in advance, the show is being broadcast live. They’ve even brought in many fans of the show to watch the game as it happens. I never would have guessed that there were this many fans of the show. Some things haven’t changed, however. It still seems like there are too many characters on the show and that they come and go so quickly that you never get a chance to get to know them. Typically, a guest is introduced, faces off against one of the other players, and then walks away from the game a few minutes later. We might not see that guest again for the rest of the show. Meanwhile, another new guest walks into the picture and repeats the process all over again. Our new host is very different than our old host, the Queen of Hell. This new host, Tim McCarver, is almost never seen. Instead, however, he narrates the show almost constantly from behind the scenes. Every little move that any of the guests make seems to be a ripe topic of conversation for our host. It gets a little old after a while. One big improvement, I feel, is that the producers are finally engaging the guests in interesting challenges and competitions. The main competition seems to one where a guest throws a small coconut at another guest and that guest tries to block the coconut with a big stick and then run away. Whatever type of game they are playing, however, is pretty slow moving. When this show started, the score was Red Sox 6, Yankees 2. An hour later, after many cast changes, the score remained the same. I’ve watched paint dry faster than that. All in all, however, I really do like all of the changes and twists that Fox has made to Forever Eden. Next episode: According to the Fox website, Forever Eden will return in June.
