Fraternity Life 2 – So What Ever Happened With the “Koi Fish Incident”?by Phil Kural -- 04/29/2004
View Printable version of this article If you remember, I was the best recapper ever for Fraternity Life 2. Actually, you may not remember that because it might not be the truth. Anyway, do you remember such people like Slater, with the unibrow? What about hefty Jon, who was always good for a laugh? Surely you remember whiney Robbie, and how he never shut up? If you don’t, it’s okay. The matter at hand is what happened while the show was being taped. As I mentioned in one my recap articles, there was an incident on the campus of the University of California: Santa Cruz, where the show was being taped. Apparently, several of the now-alumni of the fraternity and two of the pledges decided to beat a koi fish with an empty 40oz bottle. That’s right; you’re shaking your head just like I was. Let me fill you in on who was involved: Jordan and Jon, who were pledges at the time, should seem like familiar names to viewers. Jon seemed like a really nice guy on the show, and from what I’m gathering, seemed to just get caught up in the mess. Same thing goes for Jordan. He’s another one that never really seemed to get involved in the drama, but we did see several times on the show when he would be getting rowdy at a party or drinking excessively. Not that I condemn it, but it’s not exactly the image you want for yourself from a TV show. Our illustrious alumni that were involved (who were actually active brothers at the time of taping) were Matt and Casey. I can’t really say that much about Matt because we didn’t get to see a whole lot of him during the show. Casey is another story. We saw throughout the season how he would torture the pledges and go out of his way to make their lives a living hell. My guess is that he has emotional issues and was taking it out on them. Anyway, there are too many instances that I can list as to why it doesn’t surprise me that Casey was involved in all this, but if you watched the show, you know exactly why it doesn’t shock me that he was the ringleader behind the whole thing. We all know that the university banned Delta Omega Chi from operating on their campus after the incident occurred and has yet to reinstate them as a university organization. The funny thing about the whole incident is that MTV said that they had no footage of the incident. Turns out they did, and it was shown at the sentencing hearing. You would think MTV would have had enough sense to destroy the footage after they said they didn’t have it, or better yet, right after it happened! Here is an update since the trial has occurred: Jordan and Jon are going to plead guilty to misdemeanor mischief and each get 25 hours of community service plus an undisclosed amount of Alcoholics Anonymous sessions. Matt Cox pleaded no contest to misdemeanor theft and mischief. He was sentenced to 200 hours of community service and informal probation for one year where he has to check in from time to time with a Parole Officer to make sure he isn't in any trouble. Included in this is 25 hours of AA meetings, and 40 of his community service hours must be spent working with animals, be that at a shelter or the like. Now, I’m sure you would love to know what happened to Casey. He pleaded no contest and was given:
Alejandro Lucas, vice president of the Delta Omega Chi Fraternity Alumni Association, sent a press release out two weeks ago. This is what it said, concerning the incident and the verdict: The Delta Omega Chi Alumni Association is pleased that the matter involving the Porter College mascot has been resolved. We are satisfied with the judge's decision in this situation and believe it is appropriate given the circumstances. The incident was not a Delta Omega Chi Fraternity sanctioned event by any means and is being frowned upon by the Alumni Association.I can only hope that things change now that the verdict has been read and the situation is almost over. It really is a shame that the fraternity as a whole has to suffer from the stupid decisions of one active brother at the time. Yes, he did influence others to help him carry out the act, and they to deserve to be punished too. But I do firmly believe that nobody would have had the idea to kill the koi had Casey not brought the idea to the table. My thoughts go out to Delta Omega Chi, and I wish them luck in getting reinstated with the university and hoping that everything can finally be laid to rest.
