Outback Jack, Episode 6: Enter the Boomerang

by David Bloomberg -- 08/01/2004
Marissa returns and Jack is thrilled! The other ladies, not so much. But can she get back into Jack’s heart by winning a race? And why are the ladies sticking their fingers… um… there?!

A few weeks ago, the women of Outback Jack voted out Marissa, thinking she was then gone for good. But last week, Marissa returned, just like a boomerang thrown in the Outback. I had a chance to talk to Marissa before this episode aired, and she provided her side of the story. She also said we should keep tuning in for more surprises. So let’s see what this week brings us!

So four women remain again – Maria, Natalie, Meri-De, and Marissa. But when we come back, only one of them is sharing a long embrace with Jack: Marissa. JD explains that while they voted Marissa out, he had said she could vote for one of them to leave, but he never said that woman was going home. Jack is the only one who can make a final elimination. The looks on Maria and Natalie’s faces say, “Oh crap.” But Meri-De had no part in that, so she introduces herself to Marissa.

Marissa asks the two originals if they missed her. Silence. So she switches to Meri-De and asks where she came from. Meri-De’s response: “San Diego.” OK, probably not what Marissa was really asking. But Meri-De instantly takes the same attitude towards Marissa that the other two have, as she complains that Marissa was cold and faces her back towards the other women (I think it’s more that she is facing her front towards Jack, really). I do have to wonder if perhaps the other women had told Meri-De about Marissa during their time together (I know I would have, if only for something to talk about), and that is why she takes such an instant dislike to her.

Natalie tells us she can feel the drama in the air. She knows now it will get more interesting and “claw-ey.” Immediately thereafter, Marissa notices that Natalie is wearing Jack’s necklace. She apparently cannot imagine that he gave it to her, so she asks if Natalie won it. Natalie avoids answering and says she just has it now. Marissa is upset that she won’t tell her, but Natalie says privately that it’s none of her business. But Marissa tells us she’s back and has time with Jack, so it doesn’t matter if they all have Jack’s necklaces on.

Maria also shares her feelings about the situation. In short: “this is bulls#!t.”

But now it’s time to pack up and take a hike. As they walk, we get voiceovers from Meri-De, Natalie, and Maria basically saying that they now need to figure out where they stand with Marissa back. But before we can find out, they stop by Jack’s old friend, John, a “farmer of sorts.” What does he farm? Crocodiles, as the women quickly see when John pulls back the cover off a large box.

John tells them that he has to sort out the roughly two-foot crocs to split up the males and the females, and they are going to help. John shows them how to get in and grab the croc, but they all jump when the first one gets away. Jack tells us that he wants to see how the women fare because, “if you don’t like animals, you don’t stand a chance with me.” I think there’s a difference between “liking” animals and sticking your hand into a pen full of sharp-toothed carnivores! And no, I’m not talking about Marissa!

John says they will do it two at a time. Maria volunteers to try to step up for Jack, and Meri-De goes in with her. Meri-De grabs the first one without a problem. Maria has one miss but then gets one. They bring the crocs over to John for sexing. Jack tells us that John keeps the females for breeding, and releases the males back into the wild. John tells the women that all the sexual parts are inside, so they have to feel for it. Natalie makes exactly the sort of face you’d expect her to make up on hearing this news.

Meri-De sticks her finger in and all the women screech about how disgusting it is. Can’t say I disagree with them. Meri-De says that most guys would probably take her out and buy her dinner before she plays with “their willy.” Heh.

Marissa checks hers (and gosh, thanks to the producers for showing this all to us. Blech), and is certain it’s a female. Jack double-checks and says no, that’s a male. Whoops! Maria snidely comments to us that she’s surprised Marissa couldn’t find the willy when she needed to, “because she should be an expert. Ouch.

Maria finds a boy as well. Are there any girl crocs here? Next up is Natalie, but she has long nails, and John says she needs to cut it off. She won’t do it, so Jack does it for her – but he isn’t exactly used to doing nails. So it’s shorter, but it’s also crooked and has edges that snag. That’s life in the Outback, I guess.
