The Amazing Race 5, Episode 6: I’ve Got the Sandbox Bluesby Phil Kural -- 08/11/2004
View Printable version of this article Previously on The Amazing Race, seven teams left St. Petersburg, Russia and headed to Cairo, Egypt. Colin & Christie came across the first Fast Forward and were able to check in first at the Pit Stop with a comfortable seven hour lead. Marshall’s legs continued to hurt him as he walked through the desert, while Mirna & Charla’s spirits were lifted by the desert winds. Karli & Kami, along with Linda & Karen both had issues with finding their way around, but Chip redeemed himself with the twins when he showed them the way to the clue box they couldn’t find. Linda & Karen were the last team to check in, but found out that this was the first of four non-elimination Pit Stops during the race. However, their penalty was to hand in all their money, and they will receive no money for this next leg. Will they remain competitive, and who will be eliminated next? Find out right now! But first, a little reintroduction to the remaining teams, in the order they’ll leave the Pit Stop:
Like I said above, we begin in Cairo, Egypt, along the Giza Plateau. This desert area is home to the Sphinx, which is the 5th Pit Stop in a race around the world. Teams arrived here at the end of the last leg to eat, sleep and rest. Linda & Karen were lucky enough to escape elimination (thank goodness), but lost all their money and will get no money for this next leg. They both say they won’t give up. Will they be defeated or beat the odds that are stacked up against them? Personally, I’d love to see them come from behind! Colin & Christie will be the first to leave the Pit Stop at 11:27 p.m. Their clue tells them to get to the entrance of the Great Pyramid. Once there, they must descend into the chamber and get their next clue. The center of the Great Pyramid is the geographical center of the Earth. Wow, I never knew that! Colin tells the camera they have a seven hour lead and want to hold it. Christie remarks that both she and Colin always think they are right, so sometimes they have issues. Well – whatever works! This team is a great racing team, and may go down in my book as one of the smartest racing teams ever! They get to the pyramid and find that it doesn’t open for several hours. When all is said and done, they will only have a 40 minute lead over Chmirna, who will leave the Pit Stop next. Colin & Christie use the extra time to sleep, and at 6 a.m. they enter the pyramid. They quickly find their clue, and it tells them to get to the city of Luxor, Egypt, via the Domestic Airport, also known as the “Old Airport.” Once in Luxor, they must get to the Karnac Temple. They can get to Luxor by a chartered flight at 11:30, or any scheduled private flight. They quickly hurry to the airport, knowing they don’t have much of a lead anymore. The next team to leave the Pit Stop is Chmirna at 6:41. Mirna is chanting to Charla to hurry, but it looks to me like they are side by side! I love this team so much that words can’t describe it. Charla is carrying the team, while Mirna is paranoid and thinks everyone is against them. In fact, Mirna tells the camera that they are happy that they are pissing everyone off because they are a strong team and nobody expected them to be. Hmm, that might be true! I honestly didn’t think they’d make it this far – but I’m happy they have! Not far behind the cousins, Brandon & Nicole, the Hypocrites, leave at 6:45 a.m. Nicole says that they know they need to be calm in order to do well. Chip & Kim are right on their tails, leaving at 6:46 a.m. Kim notes that she knows Chip is the leader of the team and she has to get more involved and do some activities along the race.Chmirna get to the pyramid the same time the Hypocrites do. Brandon won’t go in because God told him danger awaits him. I’m kidding – he goes. Charla is having a great time going down the shaft because it’s small, just like her. Did that sound dirty? Both teams get their clue quickly and head to the airport. Brandon has to take off his shirt, though, because God told him it was the right thing to do if he gets hot. Mirna doesn’t mind and appreciates him doing so. Charla makes sure to ask him if he’s clothed before they leave the pyramid. Loves it! Chip & Kim also get their clue quickly and head to the old airport. Colin & Christie are at the airport looking for another flight besides the charter flight, but can’t seem to find one, so they know all the other teams will catch up. It’s 7:21 now, and Crass & Rude are leaving the Pit Stop. Marshall says his legs are feeling a little better, but he worries when he sees the clue about going down into the pyramid. Even Chip says something to Kim about Marshall going to have a rough time. Crass & Rude get to the pyramid and see the dip. Crass coaches Rude down the shaft, but Rude worries the whole way. Back at the airport, Chmirna and the Hypocrites arrive. Chip & Kim are not far behind them. Chmirna can’t find a flight, so decide to wait for the next team to get there, take their taxi, and look at the other terminal. Here’s where the drama begins. I like to call it: Sentimental Favorite Showdown! Colin & Christie arrive in their cab. Colin gets out, but leaves their bags in the trunk and hasn’t paid the driver yet. Christie gets out to check something, and when they are both out, Chmirna hops in the cab! Colin tries to tell them that they haven’t finished with the cab yet, while Mirna tries to fight the whole situation, saying Colin is bullying them. Christie calls them both rude, but Chmirna finally gets out of the cab, culminating with Mirna calling Colin a maniac, then hocking a lunger on the street! How ladylike! I officially love her ten times more than I did before. 1 2 3 Next-->View Printable version of this article |
