Big Brother 5: Yes, I’m Still a Diane-Fan

by Phil Kural -- 08/17/2004
Several weeks ago, Phil wrote an article on why he liked and respected Diane. This article expands those ideas along with Phil’s reasons as to why he thinks Diane is going to walk away as the winner of Big Brother 5.

I’m sure you remember the last article I wrote about Diane, and how she’s easily my favorite in the house this season. Well, nothing has changed – in fact, I think I love Diane more than I had originally, especially after she won Head of Household and showed what she was capable of.

I left off after Drew was Head of Household, and Diane escaped being nominated, even after the Golden Power of Veto was used, with Scott and Jase both wanting her to be put up in place of Nakomis. Instead, it was Adria that earned the nomination, but still managed to escape being voted out of the house that week, in favor of Holly. Diane pledged that she would fight tooth and nail in order to win the next HOH competition, and did just that by outlasting all the other houseguests in a competition that involved stamina, as well as mental prowess. Diane showed that she had the grit and determination to win, but standing with her finger on a button for over nine hours – outlasting Jase, who said there was no way he was going to lose. I scoffed when he lost.

Then, Diane did exactly what she said she would do, and what everyone knew she would do – she nominated Scott and Jase – the two people in the house who were treating her like crap. That’s the great thing about Diane, and what I said I liked about her in my first article – she is not full of fluff, and when she says she is going to do something, she does it. Her priorities were straight, and she went with her gut instinct when putting the two leaders of the Four Horsemen up for eviction. I applauded her and was more than happy to see those jerks put up.

When Jase won the Golden Power of Veto – did Diane cry about it? Nope. Instead, she congratulated him, all the while Jase kept insisting that her time was coming and she was going to be gone the next week. Fat chance. Jase used the Veto, Marvin was put up, and people knew that it was Scott going home. Jase still taunted Diane, after kissing her butt when she won HOH, that she was going home next week. Who won HOH that next week? Nakomis! She would never have put Diane up, and I couldn’t have been any happier. Jase knew his time was up, and scrambled to stay in the house. Nakomis hatched “The Six Finger Plan,” which sent Jase packing a week later. Wow, funny how the two people who swore up and down that Diane would never see the sequester house didn’t make it there themselves. I love irony.

So, where does Diane stand now? I’d say she is one of the most comfortably placed people right now. She has a strong ally in Drew. Will, Nakomis, and Karen all think that she is on their side. The twins have a secret alliance with her, while Marvin finds her very attractive and in my opinion, would never put her up for eviction. Her only problem would be if Cowboy won HOH next week, as he might still be pissed about her orchestrating the departure of his best friend and her being in on Jase getting the boot as well. However, the chances of him winning are slim to none, and I don’t see it happening.

The fact of the matter is that Diane is the sleeper in this competition. She speaks her mind and everyone feels that she is on their side – kind of like Danielle from Big Brother 3. I don’t feel she should have any worries about going home in the near future, and if she can continue to fool the masses, I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see her walk away as the winner of this season. Actually, that’s what I’m hoping for. So here’s to Diane and hoping that she can continue being the best player this season, and my favorite to watch plot and scheme!

Phil Kural is finally a college graduate! You can still reach him at pkural@temple.edu, but he’s not sure how long that address will remain his. When it changes though, you’ll be the first to know.
