Canadian Idol 2, September 2: The Final Three Emergeby Paris Cosby -- 09/03/2004
View Printable version of this article It’s the results show for the Top 4 and I tell you, I’m pretty excited. It’s getting so close to the end. The excitement is definitely building! Ben is in all black tonight and it’s a great look for him once again. And, we have the big band back for one more night. Ben immediately heads to the judges for the obligatory questions. He wants to know if Zack thinks last night measured up. Zack doesn’t think we see enough live music on TV these days. I swear the man rarely answers a question with a direct answer. What was the biggest surprise for Sass last night? “Jason Greeley.” I have to admit, he surprised me as well. Ben wants to know who Farley thinks has grown the most over the competition. Farley thinks they’ve “all grown in different ways.” And, finally, Jake thinks the level of performances did have something to do with the live orchestra. He thinks it’s a great way to perform. So do I. The show was amazing last night. It’s time for the group number now and Jason comes out on his own singing “Come On Get Happy.” He seems a little tense tonight but he does a good job of it – being the entertainer that he is. Theresa is out next, looking gorgeous as ever, singing “Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me.” She sits on a stool by the piano and is completely wonderful and mesmerizing. Jacob is out to entertain us next. He’s entertaining and charismatic. I have to say, I think Jacob completely won me over last night! Finally, of course, we have Kalan Porter. The screams are unbelievable for this kid. He sings “You’re Nobody ‘Til Somebody Loves You” and is, well, perfect as usual. The other three join it and they sound great! These group numbers, as a whole, have been pretty good this year. I’m impressed. Ben speaks to each Idol now. He asks Jacob if he could write about his experiences this summer. Jacob thinks that he could – “a couple albums.” Adding that one song is completely for Ben. Kalan is pretty familiar with this type of music thanks to his grandparents. Jason’s favourite from this era is Frank Sinatra. And, finally, Ben asks Theresa if he can have a crash course in scat. She says she’s heard him scat and thinks he should stick to hosting. Ha! Jon Dore is up now and he’s outside in the line for rush tickets. He’s getting really funny this year. There are a few people shown who have traveled from Medicine Hat, Montreal, and Newfoundland to see the show. I have it on good order that the ladies from Medicine Hat made it in that night. There is another Jon Dore segment following… This time he is sleeping and the Idols try to wake him up. It’s not as funny. It’s called filler. Moving on… Matt Dusk is in the house tonight! You may know him from The Casino. He’s going to be singing “Two Shots” – the title track of his CD. I’ve never actually heard him sing before and I must say I really like him. He’s got a really cool sound to his voice and he’s a great entertainer. You can tell he’s been at this a while. Ben speaks with Matt and asks him when he’ll be touring. Matt explains that they’re doing a bit of a tour right now with dates set for this month in Montreal and London. After that, look for a tour to start in November. Ben notes that Matt was the CNE’s Rising Star in 1998. What advice would Matt give these four Idols? Matt says to “have fun. This is a great opportunity.” As for The Casino, Matt says it “was exciting!” He had cameras in his face for 18 hours a day. Ben jokes that yeah, he wouldn’t know what that was like. That jokester. Matt sings one more song for us, “Fly Me To the Moon” and I think I’m surely convinced to go out and buy this CD. I really love his voice! We have a quick commercial break and are back with even more Jon Dore! I think this is a record number of times he’s appeared on one show. This time, though, it’s the results from the online voting for the Best, or as I like to say, most tolerable, of The Best and The Worst of Canadian Idol. Without recapping that horror show again, I’ll just let you know that the winners were Marvin Poon and Margaret-Anne Kern with “Almost Paradise.” Jon accepts the award on their behalf. I sigh a huge sigh of relief, because there for a minute, I thought we might be subjected to them again. Oh! It’s results time. I’m really stressing out. I get so excited when it’s so near the end of the show! Ben tells us that there were over three million votes last night and that the voting was extremely close. He recaps the judges’ comments from last night and then says we’ll find out the first member of the bottom 2 after the break. I scream, “Ugh! I hate you, Ben!” After the longest two minutes of my life, we discover that Jacob... is safe! He jumps up, hoots, and hollers. I’m guessing he wasn’t so sure. We then find out that the first member of the bottom 2 is Jason Greeley. That leaves Theresa and Kalan. And, the second member of the bottom 2, is… Theresa Sokyrka. Ben moves to the judges for comments on the results… Jake is a little surprised at the results, but not much – adding that two of the four had to be there. Farley gives “kudos to both.” He thinks Theresa will survive tonight. Sass finds it all “heartbreaking” and Zack feels there aren’t enough variety shows on television these days. As is the format now, Jason and Theresa both get a chance to perform their songs. Jason sings “I Won’t Dance” and Theresa chooses “A Paper Moon.” I notice she has extensions in her hair tonight. Well, this is it. It’s time to find out. With an incredible pause (literally it seems to take forever), Ben tells us the next eliminated contestant is… Jason Greeley Jake tells Jason that it’s “been an honour to have you sing.” Farley describes him as a gracious, wonderful individual. Sass says that he has an “absolutely huge future.” And, Zack tells Jason that if he gets stuck making a record deal, to give him a call. Jason sings the show out with “Easy.” He does a great job. Next week, it’s the judges’ choices as to what our three remaining Idols sing. I’ll be here with all the details. ‘Til then… You can send Paris fan mail, hate mail, or junk mail at pariscosby@hotmail.com.
