Last Comic Standing 3: Cancellation News, Day 2by Dale Sherman -- 10/07/2004
View Printable version of this article After our article yesterday in which we detailed the immediate cancellation of Last Comic Standing 3, we have been swamped with emails from fans wanting to know how they can get their voices heard with NBC about the situation. NBC does have a couple of email addresses that can be used to send complaints about the cancellation. The first is for the show itself: The second is for NBC programming in general: For those of you who wish to phone or fax instead, you can contact NBC at these two numbers: Phone: 212-664-4444 If you call, state that you wish to make a complaint and you’ll be switched over to an automated comment line. If you wish to write or call in to complain, please be courteous and stick to the point. As fans, we want NBC to reconsider the cancellation of the program and allow the program to end with some type of finale that goes beyond just a brief announcement in the Father of the Pride “marathon” on October 12. While feelings may be a bit tense, any type of strong language or profanity will probably get your email dropped into the delete file quicker than a calm request for action to be taken. If you write to one or both of the addresses above (and there’s nothing wrong in writing to both, and I have in this case), you’ll get a generic email back thanking you for your comments. Don’t be deterred by this – people at NBC do read these emails and consider them important. We had recently been told by someone working at the network that each message received is viewed as representing 1,000 viewers, so your comments are important in helping to get NBC to reconsider their decision. Meanwhile, we are hearing some stories back from people who are in the know about the program. While some rumors have suggested that perhaps the use of “non-family-hour” material by the comics in the 8:00 timeslot may have had something to do with the cancellation, most signs point to the ratings themselves being the issue at hand. Unfortunately for NBC, Tuesday at 8:00 has become a huge hole for them, thanks to the CBS juggernaut. This even explains the downward turn for LCS during the second season and definitely in the third – when some of the highest rated programming of the week is opposite you at 8:00, you’re bound to not do as well. To think that two repeats of Father of the Pride will suddenly do better in the ratings is rather questionable, however. We are slowly hearing statements from contestants on the program confirming the cancellation of the program. Not much more to add beyond that other than, as one contestant confirmed last night in an email to me, no one seems to be sure how exactly NBC plans on announcing the winners on Tuesday. We also have been told that NBC may grant the show a reprise by allowing them to do a finale via The Tonight Show. That is unconfirmed at this time and is just being considered, however. We are still awaiting an official word from NBC about the cancellation. More news as it develops. You can e-mail Dale about this column or his other projects at justabob@iglou.com.
