Growing Up Gotti, Episode 10: Dressed to Chill

by Joan McGrath -- 11/03/2004
It’s Fashion Week in New York City, and Victoria and the boys are invited to stroll the runway in style. But Victoria is worried about the dress she’s supposed to wear and the boys aren’t even sure they want to participate.

Okay, I really wanted to name this recap “The Red Sox Win the World Series!” but I restrained myself. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE RED SOX! And, on a personal note, Jason Varitek, PLEASE don’t leave Boston!

Now that that’s out of the way, on with the show!

Victoria’s publicist, Matt Rich, visits the office. He’s responsible for keeping Victoria updated on the hottest events. Matt tells her that there is a collection being presented at the show and the designer would love for Victoria to be the grand finale. The designer has designed a dress for Victoria to, and Matt lets her know that he told the designer “shorter is better” for Victoria’s dress. She’s worried about her sons’ reaction to the length, but says she’ll take part.

Her sons will be watching from the front row, and they don’t usually keep their opinions to themselves. Funny she should bring up the boys, because they’ve also been invited to walk in one of the shows! There is a collection called “Guido” that they’d be perfect for. Matt hands Victoria a gold chain with a huge “Guido” hanging from it as a bribe for them to be in the show. Victoria doesn’t think the boys will do it, but tells Matt she’ll talk to them about it. As she says, “I can’t even get them to walk their dogs.” Ha! So true.

The first son she asks is John. They’re on the phone, and while we don’t hear John’s reaction, we do hear Victoria’s reply: “No, you’re not gay, John… not all models are gay.” While John doesn’t want to do it, Victoria starts to think it might be a good experience and might “broaden their horizons and all.” She figures she’ll ask Frankie next. Jen says he’s home, and she cracks me up with the way she says it: “They were making obscene noises in the kitchen, so they have to be here.” Victoria calls for Frankie, and we’re treated to a fart sound effect. Lovely. Anyway, Frankie says he’ll go if they (his brothers) go. That seems reasonable.

Victoria goes for her dress fitting and the dress is gorgeous! But it is pretty short, and she’s worried about what the boys will say. I can’t really describe the dress, but I’ll try anyway. The bottom layer is skin-colored, and it’s got a lot of black lace and beading over it. So it kind of looks like Victoria’s skin underneath the black lace.

Back to the boys’ situation. The Guido show starts in less than two hours, and they haven’t even decided if they’re going to do it. Wow, I can’t believe Victoria is even bothering to ask them at this point. But anyway, it seems like Carmine’s interested but he doesn’t want to do it alone.

Matt calls to make sure that the boys are on their way. Ha! Victoria tells him that they’re having second thoughts about doing the show. But John, in the background, says that he was never going to do the show. Matt talks to Carmine and tries to convince him, saying that they clothes are “fun.” Matt offers to talk to Frankie and John, but Carmine tells him not to bother. Victoria really feels that Carmine wants to do the show and is just nervous, so she’s trying to convince him to go.

Back at the show, Matt is having a discussion with Maritsio, the fashion promoter. Matt asks him who booked the boys, and Maritisio says that he did. He talked to Victoria and she said they’d do it, no problem. Hmmm… I didn’t see that anywhere in the show, so you have to wonder what really happened.

Anyway, Matt says either they can try to get all the boys in or Carmine can bring a friend to help him feel more comfortable. Maritsio gets pretty bitchy, telling Matt, “I can’t have options right now. They agreed to do it. I called Victoria, she said absolutely no problem. And now this is a problem. As of right now, I need to do my job and you guys need to do yours.” Then he walks away with his nose in the air. Matt says the guy was pretty dramatic. I agree.

Matt calls Victoria and tells her that it’s important for the boys, or at least, for Carmine to be there. He says they should take the manhood to say I’m not coming for the following reasons. Now who’s being dramatic? Victoria is yelling at all the boys to get in the car and finally gets Carmine to go.

Victoria is on the phone with Matt from the car, making sure that the show will wait for Carmine, and that he’s definitely going on. He tells her the show has already started and isn’t sure if Carmine is going to be in the show. Victoria is ticked and tells Matt they “killed themselves” to get there. Well, maybe if Carmine didn’t keep pulling the “I don’t know if I’m going to do it” routine. But, hey, I remember being 18, pretty unsure of myself (no matter how cocky those boys can act, they’re still teenagers) and doing something he’s never done before, on his own, with hundreds of people watching, has to be tough. Matt says he can be in the show if they’re there in ten minutes.

Backstage Carmine is getting dressed. They bring out nice pants and a silk shirt. But the pants are too tight, so he’s going to wear his own jeans. Now he’s got a wifebeater on under a sports jacket but he wants to wear the silk shirt. Carmine asked the designer and he said no to the shirt because there wasn’t enough time. Enough time to what? Just throw the shirt on!

Matt comes to the rescue! He puts Carmine in the shirt. Carmine’s walking down the runway and he does look good, except his jeans are a bit ripped and baggy. Someone in the front row is commenting on it, rather snarkily, but from the waist up, he looks great. And now backstage, Maritsio is kissing Carmine’s butt, asking him to come back next year.
