Survivor: Vanuatu – Could We See the First 7-0 Vote?by David Bloomberg -- 12/12/2004
View Printable version of this article In eight seasons of Survivor, we have seen many things. One thing we have yet to see, though, is a shut-out – a vote of 7-0 at the end. We have come close twice with 6-1 votes – in Pearl Islands when Sandra beat Lillian, and in Amazon when Jenna beat Matthew. As we head to the Finale of Survivor: Vanuatu, I wonder if this might just be the first. Many possible scenarios would not provide us with a 7-0 vote. However, I think there are three that might: Chris vs. Scout, Chris vs. Twila, or Twila vs. Scout. In both cases with Scout, she would be the one receiving zero; in Chris against Twila, Twila would be the unlucky one. Frankly, only the Twila vs. Scout situation has a significant possibility of a 7-0 vote, but let’s address all three anyway. So let’s address Twila vs. Scout first. In such a Final Two, I think Twila easily gets the votes of all three men (Sarge, Chad, and Chris). Yes, Sarge might still be upset that Twila turned on him, but the two of them talked afterwards and he seemed to have gotten over it on a personal level. I don’t think he will hold that against her if she is up against Scout. I rather doubt Sarge has much respect for the way Scout played the game and simply cannot see him voting for her. That leaves four women, none of whom particularly liked either of the two finalists in this scenario. I hear some of you saying, “But Ami said she wanted to drown Twila, why would she vote for her?!” True. But Ami also said a number of bad things about Scout, and her “rainbow” comment in voting against her also had quite a bit of bitterness in her. In the end, though Ami might find it “yucky,” she will have to vote for one of them. I believe it will be Twila because at least Ami can respect Twila’s game play, if not necessarily the way she went about it. I also believe that Leann will follow along the same path. Eliza has not liked either woman, but seemed especially perturbed at the way Scout would talk down to her. Julie spent her entire Survivor stay with Twila and I think will go along with her at the end as well. In a Chris vs. Scout situation, things get a bit dicey. While Twila vs. Scout gives a choice of two evils, Chris vs. Scout allows for the possibility of gender-based voting. Indeed, I believe the men will all vote for Chris, without question, in such a situation. I don’t think Eliza and Julie were ever all that particularly thrilled with the all-female idea, and both were, at one time or another, fairly close with Chris. While this could cause a backlash, I think both of them will understand that he did what he felt he needed to do. Plus, he will be up against Scout. There is no way Eliza votes for Scout, as already mentioned. I can’t see Julie voting for her under this circumstance either. Ami and Leann, were both strong proponents of the all-female alliance (well, for most of the time, anyway). But Ami said, in her interview with me, that the all-female alliance was actually Scout and Twila’s idea. Frankly, it really doesn’t matter whose idea it was – I don’t see it holding into the finals with Scout as the only female choice. I think Ami will still bear a grudge against Scout but really has nothing against Chris. Leann will vote similarly. But what about Twila? Certainly she would vote for Scout, right? In all probability, yes – which is why I said earlier that a 7-0 vote in this situation is less likely. However, a lot can happen from the Final Four to the Final Two. If, somehow, Scout were to win final immunity and chose to take Chris, I could see Twila being mad enough to throw her vote to Chris. Likely? No. But possible. Chris vs. Twila gives us a very similar situation. Although the guys would be inclined to vote for Twila if she were up against Scout, I can’t see it happening against Chris. Leann and Ami would be even more likely to vote for Chris if he’s up against Twila (or, more accurately, the would be voting against Twila). Same with Julie and Eliza. And just reverse what I said about Scout and Twila on paragraph above to see the final possibility. If these predictions bear out, the final vote will be 7-0 against either Scout or Twila in one of these situations. Of course, there are still things that could change, even in one of these two Final Twos. As Betsy Wasser discusses in her “Surviving the Jury” article, the final words players say to the jurors can have an effect and cannot be taken for granted. To be honest, I can’t imagine what Scout would say at this point that could get her even one vote against either Chris or Twila, or anything Twila could say to get a vote against Chris, but it’s possible. Or the flip-side could happen – if Twila is against Scout, she could let her short temper get the better of her and say something that would cause a person to vote for Scout only because it is against Twila. Even with that possibility, I think this season gives us the best possibility of a 7-0 vote that we have ever had. We’ll just have to see how it plays out.
