Strange Love: A Preview

by Mel Ellis -- 01/09/2005
What happens when you take two very strange people – Brigitte Nielsen and Flavor Flav – and put them in a house together? We found that out in Surreal Life 3. So what happens when they get out of the house? You get Strange Love, which is also airing on VH1!

I thought I was having flashbacks. You know, like when you first saw Psycho and couldn't take a shower for weeks? That's what it felt like. I saw the preview clip of Brigitte Nielsen and Flavor Flave's new reality series, Strange Love, and I could swear it was just a nightmare. Oh no, children, it's all too real.

Strange Love continues the love story of the two strangest people ever to live in Glen Campbell's mansion for 12 days. You'll remember that on Surreal Life 3, Brigitte (Gitte) and Flavor (Flake) were at odds at the start of the show, but by episode two found a common physical and, some might say, metaphysical attraction to one another that defied understanding. Their story was so unique, so crazy, so improbable, so scary, that VH1 knew it had a potential spin-off on its hands.

So now, for those of you who were anxious to know how these two kids fared when they went back out into the real world (and for the rest of us, too), VH1 gives us Strange Love.

Gitte and Flake have ten episodes to decide if they will wed or not. In the first episode, Flake flies to Italy to win Gitte away from her Italian fiancé, bartender Mattia Disse. By the end of the series, the two will head to Las Vegas where Flake will have to decide whether or not to "make an honest woman" out of Gitte.

So, is this love affair real or just a publicity stunt? We'll have to wait and see. On the one hand, Flake has told some press that they are in love. However, he told Billboard magazine his only love affair is with his children. Surreal Life and, one would presume, Strange Love, is "just a vehicle." And Gitte has spoken of her love for Flake and for Mattia. She is "in love" with her fiancé, but she "adores" Flake. Clears it right up, thanks.

How will their story end? Who knows. But we’ll be here recapping the whole thing, win or lose, whether I get invited to the nuptials or not. Be sure to watch the premiere, Sunday, January 9th, 10/9C on VH1!

Mel Ellis knows what it's like to struggle with fame, having had one line in the high school play and made a short commercial at age 14. Despite this early harbinger of fame, Mel chucked it away to be an attorney. Mel can be reached at melzreality@yahoo.com with comments, criticisms, or offers for Surreal Life 4.
