The Amazing Race 6, Episode 12: Sprint to the Finish

by Phil Kural -- 02/10/2005
By now, you must know Phil Kural’s curse. He predicts the winner at the beginning of the race, and they always come in second. It has happened for the past two seasons now, not to mention the past two seasons on another show he recaps. At the beginning of this season, Phil said Kris & Jon (right) would win the race. Will they be the ones to break his curse? Find out right here!

Previously, 11 teams left Chicago and went all the way to Shanghai in a race around the world. Some faced the race with humor, but for some teams, the competition caused tempers to fly (shots of Crazy & Victoria). Family members gained a new respect for each other, and others accomplished more than they ever dreamed. Seven other teams fell by the wayside, though.

Hayden (Klip-Klop) & Aaron started strong, then stumbled, which strained their relationship. Their love and determination persevered though, which helped them propel into the final four. Kris & Jon built their strategy on teamwork, and it carried them into the final four as well. Freddy & Kendra were slammed by culture shock, but their athleticism has launched them into the finals. Adam (Sissy) & Rebecca had relationship problems from the start, Sissy’s fear of almost everything he tried repeatedly jeopardized them, and a decision came back to haunt them and almost cost them the race. Tonight, one team will fall victim to the final elimination, and one time will win The Amazing Race! In case you forgot, and for the last time for this season, these are the remaining teams:

Hayden (Klip-Klop) & Aaron – Dating actors/Professional equestrians

Freddy & Kendra – Engaged models/Sentimental Favorites

Kris & Jon – Dating long distance/Sentimental Favorites/My prediction to win

Adam (Sissy) & Rebecca – Previously dated/Could never possibly pull out a win, could they?

We begin at the 11th Pit Stop in a race around the world. Sissy & Rebecca arrived last during the last leg of the race but weren’t eliminated. However, they were stripped of their money and will receive none for this leg of the race. Will they be defeated by the odds? Will Klip-Klop & Aaron continue to race at the top? Since they were the first to arrive at 11:25 a.m. they will be the first to depart at 11:25 p.m. Their clue tells them to get to Xi’An, China. Once there, they must get to the drum tower for their next clue. Klippy says that they know they are close and will win the race. At 11:30 Freddy & Kendra head out. She says that they are focused and determined and have what it takes to win.

Next to leave are Kris & Jon, who depart at 11:44 p.m. Klip-Klop & Aaron get to the train station first and find out that the ride is 17 hours long. Also, looks like it doesn’t leave until the morning. Freddy & Kendra bicker about the train, and finally, at 12:24 a.m., Sissy & Rebecca depart. Sissy says that Freddy & Kendra made a mistake when they Yielded them because now they are determined to win. Rebecca does some begging for money, and they seem to do okay. One guy gives them $100! They get enough to head to the train station and off they go!

The other teams all get their tickets and in the morning, everyone heads out. They all have a little fun on the long train ride and it looks like everyone seems to be having a good time watching the scenery of China. When they finally get to their destination, everyone looks for a taxi. Klip-Klop & Aaron worry that they are going the wrong way, while all the teams eventually get to the destination and find it’s closed until the morning.

Morning comes quickly and all the teams head in. They each get their clue and it’s a Detour. Spray or Scroll? In Spray, teams must travel 34 miles and put on a uniform, then spraypaint the shell of a car called a “Flyer.” It will be difficult to find the factory, but the painting is fast. In Scroll, teams have to travel 31 miles to a textile factory and search for two Chinese characters on one of ten scrolls. Then they must cut them out and trade them for the clue. The factory is closer, but searching the scrolls could take some time. Looks like all the teams are doing the smart thing and going for Spray.

All the teams look for a taxi, while Kris & Jon keep getting passed over. Klip-Klop & Aaron fight in the cab, while Sissy & Rebecca are actually in the lead – for once! They get there first, followed by Klip-Klop & Aaron. Freddy & Kendra and Kris & Jon get there while the other two teams are about half-way finished. Every team scrambles but it’s Sissy & Rebecca who finish first. They get their clue, which tells them to get to the Terra Cotta Warriors Museum, which has 7000 figures made out of clay. It's the greatest archeological find of the 20th century. Sissy & Rebecca don't know what it's like to be in first place, but love the feeling!

Klip-Klop & Aaron finish next while Sissy & Rebecca hit a roadblock in their cab – looks like a government caravan. Klip-Klop & Aaron have been driving for some time now, and are worried again that they are lost. Kris & Jon finish their Detour, as do Freddy & Kendra. Both head to the museum. Kris & Jon actually manage to pass Sissy & Rebecca, but both get to the museum at the same time. Sissy & Rebecca find the clue box first, and manage to throw Kris & Jon off by acting like the clue box was on the other side of the building. Their clue tells them to get to Mount Hua, and they will find their next clue at the North Peak.

Jon & Kris are confused with finding the clue, while Freddy & Kendra are lost. Klip-Klop & Aaron finally think they are at the museum, but are at the wrong place. Freddy & Kendra do finally get there, while Kris & Jon find the box and head out. Freddy & Kendra find the clue quickly, meanwhile, Klip-Klop & Aaron get there shortly after, arguing the whole time, but finally get their clue and head to the mountain.

The bad news for Klippy & Aaron though is that they have to use the same cab driver who keeps getting them lost, even though they don't want to. Jon says in his cab that the Chinese language is very abrupt, and there is really no way to communicate since there are no base or root words. Sissy & Rebecca get to the shuttle to the top of the peak, along with Kris & Jon. Freddy & Kendra get there next while Klip-Klop & Aaron are lost again. They get out of their cab and yell at the driver, saying they won't pay. The driver grabs Aaron. Aaron throws his bag in frustration and reluctantly gives him something. They do manage to find another cab, and when they are on their way to the museum, they hug and reaffirm their love for one another. Awww.
