“Stupid Coconut!” – An Interview with Survivor: Palau’s Jeff

by David Bloomberg -- 03/22/2005
Jeff was voted out after telling his tribemates he couldn’t continue due to a coconut injury. Why didn’t he try to stick it out on the show? What did he think about the way his tribe competed? Where is his relationship with Kim? All this and more is covered in our interview!

Jeff was one of the strongest people on Ulong, and he even had found himself a girl. Unfortunately, he also found a coconut under his foot during a nighttime walk. How is his ankle these days? Does he have any regrets? What does he have to say about the strategy at Ulong? Read on to find out all this and more!

RealityNewsOnline: Hello, Jeff, and thanks for taking the time to answer these questions from RealityNewsOnline! First of all, how are you feeling – once you were voted off, how long did it take for your ankle to heal?

Jeff: Well, I feel much better than I did on the island, that’s for sure. It was about three weeks until it felt strong. I feel great now that I’ve had time to recover.

RNO: Since asking to be voted off, have you had any second thoughts about your decision and whether maybe you could have stuck it out?

Jeff: I could have stuck it out, however I would have gone home soon anyhow, so may as well do the honorable thing and help the tribe in making a smart choice for themselves. Looking back on every choice I made, I have no regrets except the fact that I was a goofball and ultimately terminated my self. Stupid coconut!

RNO: From what we saw, you were closer to Kim than anybody else – did you ever talk to her about the perception on the tribe that she was not contributing and suggest that maybe she should do something about it?

Jeff: Yup, ask her! I told her she was too cranky in the morning and needed to put forth her heart and soul if she wanted to advance with these people. We all helped around camp and challenges, just not everyone has the same strengths. I really wanted everyone to succeed.

RNO: Since we're talking about Kim, the two of you didn't like Jeff Probst's questions at the previous Tribal Council. Why?

Jeff: I didn’t give a crap what got brought up. Hey, we did, we are, and we will – why hide it. I knew it would come up at some point, I think it just caught her off guard. Or maybe she was pissed, who knows?

RNO: Do you think your relationship with Kim will blossom into anything outside the game?

Jeff: I don’t see why not, I never count my chickens before they hatch. But I know we will always have PALAU... Ha.

RNO: It seemed that all of the voting decisions on Ulong were based on strength and ability, which is in contrast to the previous season, where many of them were based on politics. Were there any alliances on Ulong based on politics, or was it truly all day-to-day based on how hard people worked?

Jeff: Well I made my thoughts very clear on the game to everyone. I figure to save yourself or at least help yourself get to the merge you need a strong tribe to get you there. But obviously not only muscle strength wins challenges. Lesson well learned.

RNO: It seems a bit odd that there was a coconut lying where it could be tripped on. Was anybody on the tribe in charge of cleaning up the campsite?

Jeff: Yeah, Koror! Just kidding, It was a total freak accident, too bad I was the freak, huh. I just wish I could have gone out in a bit more of a manly manner.

RNO: When you originally saw the makeup of your tribe compared to Koror, did it ever occur to you that Ulong would lose three straight immunity challenges, many of which had a strong physical strength component?

Jeff: NOT AT ALL! But any team player knows, if you don’t feel like everyone is playing for each other, you never come together a win.

RNO: So then, why does Ulong keep losing?

Jeff: Because no one trusts each other. You have to be able to count on someone before you can expect anything from them.

RNO: Is there anything else you'd like to tell our readers?

Jeff: This was an amazing experience and this game can be won by being the good guy, as long as you keep your eyes peeled for coconuts.

RNO: Thanks again, Jeff!
