The Weather Started Getting Rough for Professor Tiy-Eby William Ingram -- 06/24/2005
View Printable version of this article The surviving Professor on the reality show The Real Gilligan’s Island 2 may not be as smart as he claims to be. According to a recent news article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “Professor” Tiy-E may not actually be a professor after all. The June 22nd article says that although he claims to be a psychologist in Illinois, searches of the appropriate Illinois records provided no evidence to support the claim. Tiy-E does, however, have a master’s degree in “guidance and counseling” from Eastern Illinois University. When asked about the discrepancies, Tiy-E replied that it was nobody’s business. He later added that he was unaware that claiming to be a psychologist without a license was illegal. Gosh, a real professor should have known that it was. The state of Georgia, on the other hand, knows that it is illegal to claim to be a psychologist without credentials and is considering pressing charges against Tiy-E, since he used that claim to secure a job as an associate professor at Clark Atlanta University. He recently left Clark Atlanta under mysterious circumstances. Tiy-E claims that he wasn’t paid enough and wanted to pursue other careers. School officials say that he left after he was confronted with the fact that he didn’t have the credentials that he claimed. The article goes on to say that Tiy-E first attracted national attention in 2002 with a series of appearances on The Ricki Lake Show as a relationship expert. He wrote several relationship articles for Jet and Ebony magazines, dating back to 2001. He co-hosts a relationship-advice program on a local Atlanta radio station. On the show, they call him the Love Doctor, although they never mention his credentials. He has been a guest speaker at dozens of colleges around the country and has written several self-published books offering relationship advice. He has even turned one of his books, Secrets Men Keep, into a play that will open in early September in Atlanta. He will play the lead character. The play will be produced by his own production company, Man II Man Development. According to the article, Tiy-E’s website listed this company as “non-profit,” but after being asked for proof of that, he has recently changed the website to say that it’s a “community based” company. One former student at Clark Atlanta University said that Tiy-E never really came across as a legitimate professor. He seemed more interested in being known as a ladies’ man rather than a professor. His charm and good looks had, apparently, kept people from questioning his credentials. On The Real Gilligan’s Island, his charm has won over Gilligan Shawn. The two of them have become good buddies and were the central core of the majority alliance until Mary Ann Randi betrayed them. I guess charm and gustiness will only get you so far in this world.
