Rock Star: INXS, August 24 – The One Thing

by Jen Shrader -- 08/25/2005
The one thing about the show tonight was it had more than a few surprises. Deanna (right) and Marty voice their opinions on INXS’s opinions. Which favorite wound up in the bottom three? Which favorite didn't? And the one thing that shouldn't surprise us? J.D. still has an opinion on everything.

Brooke Burke welcomes us to the Wednesday night results show and promises "extraordinary" behind the scenes drama. She introduces Dave and the band and Dave says, "What up baby birds!" Yeah, I don't know what the hell he's talking about, either. Brooke says that last night proves that anything can happen – we had the world premiere of two original songs, Ty performed his song with three incredible backup singers (his female competition), and there was a misstep from an unlikely source. Yeah, they're going to be grinding on Jordis for the whole hour. Get ready.

Brooke starts the obligatory recap of the previous night's show, starting with Dave questioning J.D. and Marty about their song choices and working through all the performances. We end with the shot of Dave making the evil eye over Jordis's performance. (You’re better off just reading David’s recap of Tuesday night.) Then to rub it in even more, Brooke says that after seven weeks she thought she'd seen it all, but Jordis shook her up last night. Good lord, woman. You're just the host. Dave says it was indeed shocking but it proves that anyone can have a bad day. He says he would love to be a "fly on the wall" back at the mansion.

Amazingly, we have footage of just that! (They are being taped 24-7 ya know.)

Suzie says it's down to the wire and they're getting there fast. Jordis, with her head in her hands, laments that she butchered a really good song. Marty says the band told him he needs to sing more and scream less, but if they tell him to tone it down he's going to turn it up. Deanna is pissed off because every week she gets the same critique – she's in her "comfort zone."

Jordis interviews that she wonders if she does end up in the bottom three, will the band say, "Hmm. Is that right for our band?" Ty says he feels like some people didn't do their best and they should be in the bottom three to know what it's like. Suzie says her ultimate reaction is, anything goes.

Back onstage, Brooke asks who thinks they deserve an encore. Deanna, Ty, and Suzie raise their hands, then J.D. takes a look around and raises his hand. Ty says he had a good performance and last night was the first time it felt like a show and not a competition. Deanna says she's proud of her song. Mig, who didn't raise his hand, says he's proud of his song too, but he could have done better. He faltered a little bit last night and other performances were more deserving.

Dave says he and the band discussed it and the encore is going to someone who always sets the bar high vocally, always nails the performance, and last night went above and beyond anything they'd done before. The encore goes to... Suzie!

Suzie is stunned but gives another great performance, complete with another stage dive. At the end of the song she's not really so much singing, but jumping up and down and smiling and acting like a maniac. It's cute in a thank God it's not a performance night kind of way.

Once that's done, Brooke reminds us the show isn't about the encore, it's about who goes home and about the people's vote. The initial bottom three were revealed after the show last night, but as we've seen, that could change.

But before any bottom three is revealed, we go to commercial, then Brooke comes back and reminds us that some of the greatest music ever written has been performed on the show. She then shills a full-length CD of performances, which will be available soon. Yay! I'll buy that. (Here’s your chance: click here to order it now.) Then it's time to go back to the mansion, where Brooke says all the mixed emotions came out.

Deanna is still pissed off about the "comfort zone" comments. She asks, "How comfortable is 'power rock?'" J.D., who of course has an opinion, says Deanna shouldn't take this personally. The contest is boiling down to who is right for INXS. Deanna says she's just singing the way she sings, everyone is being themselves but she's the only one being called on it.

Except for Marty, of course, who was told to scream less and sing more last night. He says he's making a conscious decision to go against what the band says – angst and intensity is what the kids are into now and he's trying to bring that to INXS.

Suzie says everyone can do their "thing" really well, but they have to be able to do INXS songs. Ultimately, the decision is up to the band.

Mig says he noticed Jordis was quiet when they got home and everyone was talking about the show. Jordis, outside at the table now, says she butchered a really good song. She interviews that it sucks to have a bad performance. Back at the table she threatens to jump from the roof into the pool and laughs that she'll never sing again.

J.D., who AGAIN has an opinion, says people got a few negative comments but in the end they got to sing in front of 50 million people. Now, that's just hilarious. Apparently he hasn't been informed about the ratings. J.D. says they should just suck it up and have a good time.

Ty says he'll be interested to see if the bottom three reflects the performances. Suzie says as happy as she was with her performance, she wouldn't be surprised if she's still in the bottom three. She says, "I rule that bottom three!"

Jordis says she WILL be in the bottom three.
