The Cut: Maybe a Bit Predictableby Phil Kural -- 09/09/2005
View Printable version of this article Once again, here I am to offer the opinion that I became obsessed with The Cut overnight. I said to myself that I wasn’t going to like The Cut because I thought it would end up being a lot like Project Runway, which is another show I hold close to my heart, and I’m not a fan of shows that copy off one another. Well, even though The Cut was actually thought of before Project Runway, but that makes no difference to me. The fact of the matter is, I ended up liking the show. It ended up that Chris C. won the whole thing. However, looking back, isn’t that a bit predictable? I mean, what a coincidence that the guy who is obsessed with Tommy Hilfiger, and looked at him as a role model since he was young, ended up becoming Tommy’s protégé! It’s a little too coincidental if you ask me. To me, it almost seems as if Chris were destined to win this thing anyway, no matter how stellar any of the other contestants were. Look at the facts – Chris is going to be a lap dog for Tommy, and definitely won’t be the apple that falls far from the tree. Even if Chris grows up to be this great designer, he’ll still be loyal to Tommy, since that’s the guy who he idolizes. Would that hold true if any of the other designers had won? I doubt it. They would want to grow and start their own brands. I think Chris is happy just being part of the “Tommy Hilfiger family.” Now, I’m in no way saying that Chris didn’t deserve to win the competition. In fact, I found him to be very talented. I liked almost everything he designed on the show, and found him to be a good person who others enjoyed working with. With that being said though, I think he flopped a little during the final challenge. I didn’t see anything that really stood out in his window, especially since most of it was trash that James retrieved for him at the junkyard! He could have made more pieces, instead of only clothing one mannequin. I was a little disappointed, but the clothing that he did make, I really did like. Elizabeth, bless her heart, way overstayed her welcome, and showed that with her final project. Her clothes were bland, just like her, and nothing stood out at all, let alone pave the way for a new fashion trend to begin. What I liked about Princess was that she was different. She was never scared to take a risk during the whole competition, and her outfits stood out when it was time for the final project. Her window looked professional, her outfits were spot-on and she stood behind them 100%. Even Tommy noted how great her display looked, and that he liked her outfits. His only qualm was that it would be hard to mass produce them because most of the things she did were handmade. Tommy, you damn well know there is a machine out there that can do anything these days. I hated his excuse for not picking her as the winner. Maybe if he said she is too unpredictable or the fact that she can be a little too outspoken for him at times, I would have at least understood a little. However, as usual, Tommy has an excuse that can be countered, and just ends up doing what he wants anyway. I guess he’s allowed to do that though – it is his show! I’m still glad Chris won, and I’m happy for him. His heart is in the right place, and there is no doubt in my mind that he is going to make Tommy proud. I have to admit that I was giddy to see Wes and Deanna again – I wish they would have been paired up, and I’m shocked that nobody picked Shauna, since she was one of the only people on the show who had proper sewing experience. I guess Princess didn’t need her since she knew how to sew herself, and Chris had James. Elizabeth is just too finicky to please, so I understand her picking Felix and Wes anyway. Well, the show is over, and I highly doubt there will be another season of The Cut. I simply don’t think that the ratings were strong enough to warrant another season. That being said, I enjoyed this show, and really came to love some of the people who participated. On the flip side, some people really managed to get on my nerves, especially Tommy Hilfiger! Let’s hope with the addition of Chris to his company, he can get back in style! On a totally different note, I know that Wes and Shauna both list their hometown on The Cut website as New Orleans, Louisiana. I hope they and their families are safe, and I intend to keep them, and all the victims of Hurricane Katrina in my prayers.
