The Real World Austin, Finale: Last Night, Last Fight

by Jenn Brasler -- 11/23/2005
It’s the roommates’ last night in Austin, and what would it be without a final trip to the Dizzy Rooster and one last knock-down, drag-out fight? Will Rachel, Nehemiah, and Wes leave on good terms? Will Danny and Melinda stay together? Will we ever see these people again? Does it really matter?

Previously on They Fight and Fight and Fight and Fight and Fight: Rachel and Nehemiah fought about the war. Lacey said that an instigator plus a loudmouth equaled trouble. Wes slept with Wren, then talked about it. Johanna didn’t think that was a good idea.

Melinda and Danny are in Covert Park, where they met in the first episode. Melinda tells Danny that a legend says that if you walk down the stairs once, you’ll be in love. If you walk down them twice, you’ll be engaged. If you walk down them three times, you’ll get married. She thinks that it’s romantic and nostalgic to take Danny to the place where they first met. The editors are loving that they have an excuse to put flashbacks in here. Danny invites Melinda to come to Boston and she accepts. She interviews that she’ll be going home, then visiting Danny in Boston for his birthday. Then they’ll get a place together and “be all cute.”

At the house, people pack up. Johanna tells Rachel that she wants to stay there forever. Yeah, rent-free. I wouldn’t want to leave either. Nehemiah isn’t fazed about leaving because he’s just moving on to another chapter in his life. The roommates are planning to go to dinner together then, of course, take one last trip to the DR. Wes talks about their first night together in the house – how Johanna made out with some guy and Wes almost got into a fight. Johanna says they’ll make it all better tonight. She won’t make out with anyone and Wes won’t get into any fights.

The roommates go out. Melinda interviews that she wanted to have one last roommate night. She wants them all to leave the house on good terms. Melinda just jinxed everything. Wren is at the DR and tells Nehemiah to tell Wes to “f%$@ off.” She keeps saying that he’s “small.” Wes explains that he was dancing with some girls and Wren came over and hit him. She told him, “You’re nothing.” Wes realized then that he’d done something wrong. Gee, you think? Wren accuses Wes of telling lies. Wes explains that they had sex but it was supposed to be a secret. If I’d had sex with Wes, I’d want to keep it a secret, too. Apparently he’s upset because someone he told has been talking about what happened. He’s lost respect for that person, and thinks it was either Rachel or Johanna. Danny interviews that Wes is more hurt than angry. He’s worried that something bad will happen.

Back at the house, Wes confronts Johanna. She admits that she talked to Wren but Wes doesn’t seem to think that she’s the blabber. He moves on to Rachel, who tells him that Wren hates him, though she’s not sure why. Wes says that Wren told him what Rachel said. Rachel doesn’t get it. She leaves the room and Wes and Danny agree that she spilled the beans. “I’ll kill her,” Wes says. He goes to find her and asks her to tell him the truth. Rachel interviews that Wes is an aggressive drunk and she wasn’t surprised that he came after her. Rachel tells Wes that she didn’t believe him about having sex with Wren. She thinks that Wren hitting him was poetic justice, since he “hit” her.

Wes interviews that Rachel needs to learn that she can’t treat a friend or brother like this. Did that give anyone else a creepy abuser vibe? Just wondering. Wes blasts Rachel for bringing the sex up on camera; if she hadn’t, it wouldn’t have gotten out. Except Wes interviewed last week that he and Wren had sex, so… whatever. There’s a lot of yelling and swearing going on. Language, people! Johanna pulls Wes aside and Danny tries to hold Rachel back so nothing physical can happen. (Though it’s the last night in the house, so it’s not like getting kicked out for fighting would really mean anything.)

Guess what Lacey’s doing? She’s watching the goings-on from the phone room. She’s actually watching through the fish tank, which is kind of funny. She’s also – shocker! – on the phone with Ryan, giving him the play-by-play. Nehemiah, apparently drunk, gets in the middle of the fight. “To the very end,” Lacey sighs to Ryan. She thinks it’s amusing that she’s giving him a running commentary while watching the fight through a fish tank.

She’s not so amused by what happens next, though. Apparently Rachel starts baiting Nehemiah to hit her. The next thing we see is Danny holding Rachel on the couch as Nehemiah and Wes yell at her and Melinda tries to hold Nehemiah back. There’s a lot of swearing and screaming, and Rachel is crying her eyes out.

Melinda is crying now, too, and tells Nehemiah to stop. Wes walks out of the room. Rachel is incredibly upset and Nehemiah announces that she threatened him. Danny points out that she’s a girl, so he can’t hit her. He interviews that he’s not going to let anyone hurt a girl. I’m not advocating violence, but Rachel’s a veteran – I think she could handle herself. Melinda takes Rachel out of the room and interviews that two guys ganging up on one girl isn’t fair.
