“I Can’t Have Friends Unless They Have A Sense Of Humor” – An Interview with America’s Next Top Model 5’s Kim

by Phil Kural -- 11/29/2005
Even though she started near the bottom, Kim consistently grew each week this season on America’s Next Top Model, but was still the eighth girl cut. Find out right here how she thought being openly gay would affect her chances on the show, what she thought of the granola bar incident, and the terms she and Bre are on now.

I remember in my preview article, I picked Kim to be in the final three, along with Ebony and Kyle. Well, none of the people I predicted to make it to the end actually made it to the end, but honestly, I think Kim was robbed, along with Kyle. I had a chance to interview Kim, and just like on the show, she was talkative, funny, and very easy to talk to. In this interview, Kim comments on how Bre changed, what she thought about Lisa being eliminated, and what she thought about having to be the poster child for lesbians everywhere. After this interview, I can easily say that Kim is a great person who I wish we could have seen more of!

RealityNewsOnline: Hey, Kim! Had you watched previous seasons of the show and what factored into you decision to apply?

Kim: The only season I fully watched was the third season, when Eva won. I had always wanted to be a model, and my mom had actually been a successful model in the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, so I figured I might as well give it a try. I was in school at the time and really wanted to switch it up a bit.

RNO: Did you think that being openly gay would be an advantage or a disadvantage for you being on the show?

Kim: I knew that it would be both. I didn’t want to bring my personal life into my professional life, but you have to be real about the situation and know that it’s going to happen. After all, this is a TV show. I felt that being different would be an attribute and make me stand out; on the other hand, you saw how the judges continually merged my gender with my sexuality. I mean, sexuality is only a part of who I am.

RNO: What did your girlfriend think about you making out with Sarah? Was it even an issue?

Kim: She understood that the editing played a factor. We were in sequester and when you are alone and bored, sometimes the lines get blurred. There was nothing more with me and Sarah besides being friends. Neither of us had any interest in it being anything besides that, and Sarah knew that even though I was in an open relationship, my girlfriend was the one I loved and wanted to be with.

RNO: Okay, so here’s the question you’ve been waiting for – who ate Bre’s damn granola bar? Was it Jayla… I have a suspicion that it was!

Kim: That’s the question I would like to have answered! I kinda wish it was me now because it would have been funny. I’ll tell you one thing though – it wasn’t Nicole because she was sleeping! Honestly, most of the other girls were scared of Bre, so I have no idea who could have taken it. I mean, the girl was thrown out of school for fighting, so who knows!

RNO: Is it just me, or did Bre go from being this down-to-earth girl and change into someone that all of a sudden thinks she can do no wrong? Was it just the editing and was she always that way?

Kim: Bre and I were friends in the beginning of the competition, but she definitely turned a corner. I think the competition just got to her, but she was not like that at the beginning at all. She was not really someone I was scared of, but her intensity was obvious.

RNO: Were you upset nobody came to your aid besides Nicole when Bre confronted you in the limo on the way to the airport?

Kim: I think most of the other girls were shocked at what was going on. For several weeks before that incident, all of my friends besides Nicole had been eliminated. People had issues with Lisa, and I myself only had issues with Jayla and Nik, that’s why I don’t understand what was going on when Bre confronted me. Although, everyone was talking about someone and don’t let them say otherwise.

RNO: Do you consider what you did as “talking about people behind their backs”? It never seemed like you were doing it maliciously, unlike Jayla, who constantly said mean things when alone with the camera.

Kim: See, Jayla tried to act like the girl that didn’t care if people liked her or not, as long as they said things to her face. However, you saw how brutally she cut up Nik in one of her one-on-ones. I say things mostly for comedic effect. I realized that I can’t have friends unless they have a sense of humor. The only thing I felt bad about was what I said about Lisa. I got to know Lisa after we were both eliminated and grew to love her. She’s a great girl, and I felt really sorry for what I said.

RNO: Standing with Bre in front of Tyra, and considering what happened at panel, did you think that it would be Bre going home instead of you?

Kim: Yes, I felt it would be Bre going home. For weeks I had been told by the judges that I was doing better and I knew that my pictures were consistently doing well. Eliminations are always shocking though, and you have to realize that the all of us were talented and someone had to go!
