Dancing with the Stars 2, January 20: Tangoing Out the Door

by Jill Jones -- 01/21/2006
It’s another hourlong results show, but don’t worry – you didn’t have to sit through the filler to find out the results, as Jill provides you with everything you need to know. Jerry Rice (right) was called “geriatric” after his performance – did the fans keep him around?

Welcome to Dancing with the Stars… the results show. Thursday night, our dancing duos took on the tango and jive. Tonight, one of the couples will be eliminated. If you can hang on long enough, you’ll find out which couple it is. If not, my recap will suffice nicely.

I was unable to identify all of the songs that were featured on Thursday evening’s program. But thanks to Cathy, Eric, and Brian (and ABC, since the network finally posted the names of the songs) I can now tell you the missing titles. Giselle and Jonathan danced to “Hernando's Hideaway,” George and Edyta’s song was “La Cumparsita,” and Tia and Maksim’s song was “Por Una Cabeza.”

The formalities are out of the way, so we can get on with tonight’s business. As I watch the now-familiar introduction, it occurs to me that Lisa and Louis look very much alike. Feel free to discuss.

Just as it did last week, the results show begins with an empty ballroom and the promise from Tom that in just minutes, the actual show will begin. Until then, we see the complete performances… again.

Jump about 25 minutes into the future. It’s now time for the live portion of the results show. Isn’t this really all we want? Samantha joins Tom, and he recaps the performances for us… again. Where is my dog? I really need to settle myself. Tom also runs through the current standings:

RANKINGSTARSCORE
1 Stacy 27
1 Drew 27
3 Tia 26
4 Lisa 25
5 Giselle 22
5 George 22
7 Jerry 19
8 P 14

Enough of the teasing; we’re now ready to find out the first two couples who are safe.

Stacy and Tony will return next week, as will Anna and Jerry. Did I just cheer out loud for Jerry? Yes, I did!

Samantha is backstage talking to the stars who had the lowest scores. George goes off in Spanish again and P very politely says that Len has a problem. P also makes a comment about how he and George are both from the ‘hood and are blood brothers.

Tom explains that next week, the dancers will do the foxtrot or paso doble. The professionals then perform the paso doble for our entertainment. All joking aside, it is fun to watch them. If you are new to Dancing with the Stars or ballroom dancing in general, you’ll find that this dance brings to mind a bullfight. There is a lot of marching, and stomping elements, and the woman sometimes represents the matador’s cape or bull. I’m sure I didn’t do the dance justice, but you’ll learn more about it next week.

After a commercial timeout, we’re treated to a break-dance performance by The Style Elements Crew. These guys are doing some crazy moves. One person basically just did a headstand on another person. Interesting. Not exactly ballroom dancing, that’s for sure.

Tom and Samantha are ready to reveal the rest of the couples that will be back for another week.

Tia and Maksim are safe… so are Ashly and P. As Tom would say, “Holy crap!” Ashly seems to have the same reaction – she looks like she can’t believe they are still there. Hopefully, P will step it up next week and show everyone that he wants to do well. As Diane, a RealityNewsOnline reader, pointed out, he is taking the spot of someone who is actually performing well and wants to stick around longer.

Next, we learn that Lisa and Louis will remain in the competition in addition to Cheryl and Drew.

Only two couples remain. Who has been eliminated? Edyta and George are safe, meaning Giselle and Jonathan are out of the competition.

Giselle thanks everyone for the opportunity, even the “mean judges,” she jokes. She is positively grateful for the experience. As she speaks, I realize that she looks like Jane Kaczmarek. Feel free to discuss this as well.

Tom explains what we can expect from next week’s show, including a performance by the Pussycat Dolls. This isn’t your grandma’s ballroom dancing anymore!

In the immortal words of Queen, another one bites the dust – leaving us with seven couples. Tune in next week to find out if Lisa brings her girls again, if any other star looks like someone else to me, and which couple is out of the competition. And as always, visit RealityNewsOnline for a complete summary of all the highlights.
