‘As the World Turns’ Looks for Newest Star on Online Reality Show, ‘InTurn’by David Bloomberg -- 08/22/2006
View Printable version of this article RealityNewsOnline covers a wide variety of reality TV series, but there is a new trend for reality – online shows. One of the newest is CBS Daytime’s InTurn, a soap opera boot camp in which the winner will join As the World Turns. (Get it? Intern + As the World Turns = InTurn.) The show, which premiered July 17 on CBS’ innertube, pits eight 18- to 25-year-olds against each other over the course of eight weeks. New episodes appear three days a week – on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. But don’t worry, you don’t need to dedicate hours of your life like on TV shows with multiple airings. Each episode is approximately three to five minutes long, so it’s easy to keep up with the show – or to catch up if you haven’t watched it yet. All the episodes aired to date are available on the show’s website.
As you can see, a number of the contestants are already actors. Most of the time when we see actors and actresses on reality shows, we groan as we realize they are probably just there to further their careers. In this case, however, acting is the prize and the career! The eight soap opera actor wannabes moved into a Brooklyn loft together while at the same time competing to move ahead. Challenges include screen tests, cold readings, dealing with awkward props, and even re-enacting scenes from As the World Turns. Judges eliminate five of the eight contestants, but the remaining three will be voted on by America. The way in which this occurs is, as far as I can remember, unprecedented for reality shows. Rather than just continuing to go through auditions for viewer votes, they will actually be written into As the World Turns as characters. Then viewers will vote on the contestant as the character. Ultimately, the winner will receive a 13-week contract role on the show. Of course, the possibility exists that if they do a good job and are well-received, that role could expand.
