Dancing with the Stars 3, October 18: The Show Must Go On

by Jill Jones -- 10/19/2006
Tuesday night on Dancing with the Stars, our couples did a variety of dances; none of the performances wowed Jill, but the judges were especially pleased with Karina and Mario; Tom interviewed Sara (in a pre-recorded segment) about her departure from the show. How will Sara’s exit affect tonight’s elimination? Who’s going home? Let’s find out!

Tom and Samantha welcome us to the program. They then walk us through clips from Tuesday night’s performances. Two things in particular stand out for me. First, Joey says that Bruno wanted him to be sexier last night; however, he prefers to keep that side of him behind closed doors. I just thought that this comment was very endearing and cute. Second, Louis discusses Len’s critique of his samba with Monique. In case you missed it, Len told him that his routine was not a samba. In an interview, Louis reads off all of the samba moves that he and Monique performed. Take that, Len!

Next, Tom goes through the current standings:

RANKINGSTARSCORE
1 Mario 28
2 Emmitt 25
3 Joey 24
4 Monique 23
5 Jerry 18

Len informs us that Karina and Mario have been selected to perform the encore performance. I didn’t love the dance when it was performed originally, but I do enjoy it more this time. Mario seems a bit more relaxed and I think it makes a difference.

Lionel Richie is singing “All Night Long” for us. (Not literally, that’s just the name of the song.) Karina, Elena, Maksim, and Tony dance during the performance.

Samantha is now backstage talking to some of the couples. She mentions that nobody knows how the show is going to progress now that Sara is gone. My reality television instincts tell me that there will be no elimination tonight. It has been wrong before though… like the time I thought Charla was going to share her prize money with Dave on Paradise Hotel.

The audience members now give us their opinions of Tuesday night’s show. Most of the comments are positive. Eva Longoria has to be difficult and say that she doesn’t think it is fair that Mario is being held to a higher standard than the other celebrities. Yawn. Leeza Gibbons says that people want to stick their tongues in Mario’s dimples. She also thinks that one of the couples that has been eliminated should be brought back. Shut it, Leeza. Just shut it.

It’s time to learn who is moving on. Karina and Mario are safe. So are Monique and Louis. For once in my life, I’m glad I was wrong with my prediction!

Nick is back to perform… with his wife! They are dancing to “The Show Must Go On.” The performance is wonderful. I am disappointed though; I thought they were going to dance to “The Show Must Go On” by Pink Floyd. My mistake.

Tysonia is doing the cha cha cha tonight as part of the Slim·Fast Dance Challenge. She informs us that the dances Christian teaches her are taking her out of her comfort zone. She also explains how important her children are to her. In fact, she performs her routine at her daughter’s high school. Tysonia looks great in her tasteful, yet revealing, outfit. She also does a nice job with the cha cha cha… at least based on the small amount of footage we’re shown.

Lionel Richie is ready to sing “I Call it Love” for your listening pleasure. Nobody dances though, so I just sort of tune out. Sorry.

Oh, great! The dancers now educate us with regard to their costumes. Did you know that the clothes they wear are custom made in about four days? Well, you do now. Jerry makes a funny about picking out clothing that goes with a big nose and glasses. Edyta explains that part of the process is putting rhinestones all over the outfit. (I don’t know about you, but I could listen to her speak all day; her voice is so soothing to me!) Kym states that she has had microphones attached to very unusual parts of her body. I once had the same thing happen to me with a cracker and tapioca pudding, but I’ll save that story for another recap.

A body language expert explains what the celebrities are telling us through their moments and expressions. Joey licks his lips when he is nervous. Mario lowers his head when his critiques are bad. Emmitt is generally relaxed, but when he becomes nervous, he clenches his teeth. Jerry puts his hand in his pocket, which shows he is uncomfortable. Finally, Monique blinks her eyes excessively when the judges are rough on her. Guess what I do? I change the channel on my television when producers shove filler down my throat. Really, this is just too much!

Tom tells us that next week, our couples will perform two dances. Len says that this is going to be a challenge for everyone. He hopes they don’t become frustrated. He then tells Jerry to remember KISS. (Keep it sweet and simple.) I don’t like it when the judges single one or two celebrities out like that for additional and unnecessary feedback.

We now learn who else is moving on in the competition. Edyta and Joey are in the bottom two. So are Kym and Jerry. This means that Cheryl and Emmitt are safe.

After a commercial break, Tom tells us that the couple leaving tonight is… nobody and no one! Jerry falls to the ground and Joey performs fake CPR on him. Tom and Samantha explain that since Sara left the program, there will be no further eliminations this evening. However, since the judges and viewers voted, those scores will be added to next week’s scores. The couple with the lowest score after that will be then eliminated.

Samantha states that it is only fitting to pay tribute to Sara and Tony. (I know Sara is going through something awful and unimaginable right now, but let’s remember that she didn’t die; she only left the program and will supposedly return for the finale.) Clips of Sara and Tony are shown; they remind me of “Montage” from South Park.

That’s a wrap, friends. What do you think of the surprise announcement? Make sure you send your comments to me. And as always, join Yoko and me next week for another round of dancing and recapping.
