Surviving the Early Show: Cao Boi and Cristina’s Interviews

Since Cao Boi and Cristina were both voted off of Survivor: Cook Islands Thursday night, that means they were on The Early Show Friday morning – together.

The host begins by telling Cao Boi he knew from the beginning that he was doomed because he has a “huge personality” and “there’s no governor on you – it all comes out all the time.” He was very outspoken from the beginning. Did he ever think maybe he should pull back and play a little closer to the vest? Cao Boi says he tried to pull back a little here and there, but he just couldn’t. If he saw something wrong, he had to say so; if he had a dream, he had to follow it. The host says he very much enjoyed watching Cao Boi play, but he just knew it wasn’t going to end well.

Moving to Cristina, the host says she was part of her tribe and working hard and getting along pretty well. Does she feel like she did enough to build some bridges? She says initially she came into the game thinking she should hold back and go with the flow. But once you’re on the island and survivor mode kicks in, you realize you have to eat and make a fire, you know you have to do something and take the initiative. It’s not being bossy, it’s about taking that first step and doing things. She thought she did her best to be a part of the tribe.

Did Cristina feel like she had any really good relationships with people? Yes, initially on the first tribe they all got along great. After that, she felt she was connected with Brad. She was close with J.P. but things happened and she feels kind of bad about that because he is a good person.

Did Cao Boi feel like he was tight with anybody? He says Flica (Jessica) was his best bud. (Cut to scenes of Cristina trying to pull Jessica’s pants off in the challenge!) But the host says he needed more than that in the bigger context – you always have to be working to make sure you get to the merge. All of a sudden, Early Show hostboy is a Survivor expert? Please. Cao Boi retorts that he’d like to see more oddballs! The problem with oddballs is they’re too independent and couldn’t get together to form an alliance and make it stick.

The host says he has a serious question for Cristina. When they were voting and showing the cards, he doesn’t remember who it was that voted against her (so much for his Survivor expertise), but they put a gun on the card. Cristina says that was Jenny. What did that make her feel like? We see a clip of Probst showing the vote, which does indeed show a gun appearing to shoot at Cristina’s name. Cristina says this is a game and she understands that, but it interrupted by the host. He says, to put it into perspective, her father was a police officer who lost his life in the line of duty (he forgets to mention that she was shot and had her arm shattered!). So when she sees something like that, how does she feel? Cristina says it really hit her more because it was personal. She thought it was a low blow and disrespectful. She says there is no way to know how Jenny felt or why she did it, but… You can tell Cristina is obviously affected by it.

Leaving the serious behind, the host says he really enjoyed watching Cao Boi and his healing powers. That’s part of our secret scene this week.

Cao Boi is working on Ozzy’s foot while a Jessica voices over that they have a medicine man who makes their wounds heal faster. She says it really makes you feel better when you’re out there, but I’m not sure Ozzy is feeling better, as he half-screams, “that’s enough!” Jessica ends by saying Cao Boi “knows everything.”

With the scene over, the host asks what Cao Boi was doing with the whole red dot thing on their heads. Cao Boi says it’s an old Vietnamese healing technique. When somebody gets a “bad wind,” he draws it together and brings it out. The host says he has a bit of a headache this morning, so Cao Boi volunteers to help him out. He puts his hands up by his head but then says no, the host doesn’t have the bad wind after all.

And so they say goodbye. I feel a little bad for Cristina, who doesn’t have nearly as big a personality as Cao Boi, but I’m sure had more to say (and she didn’t even get her own secret scene).
