Survivor: Cook Islands, Episode 7 MVPs: Beast Boy

This week on Survivor we bid farewell to Flica. Honestly, it wasn’t a big surprise. Anyone so disinterested in strategy was not long for the game. Flica may not have been a good player, but she seems like a cool person, and I really admired her very gracious final words. Flica went on Survivor not so much to win a million bucks, but to have a unique experience. In that, she succeeded. But two players succeeded in playing the game well. They are this week’s Most Valuable Players. Let’s give them their awards, shall we?

The Most Valuable Player for Raro was, once again, Nate. Nate made the best possible use of his time in the Aitu camp. Jonathan grilled him about what he does around camp, and Nate answered his questions. I thought that was smart. He didn’t really give Jonathan anything valuable, but Nate made him feel like he was. This then gave Nate the fabulous opportunity to hear Aitu talk about the previous vote. He learned that Flica was on the outside. Granted, she’s gone now, so he can’t exactly get her to vote with his tribe post-merge. But he does have an idea of who on Aitu is calling the shots, information that could prove valuable.

In the reward challenge, Aitu opted to sit Nate out. Ironically, it was Nate’s not participating that really showed Raro his worth. The tribe completely floundered in the swimming part of the challenge. I’m sure each and every one of them was looking at Nate, wishing he was competing with them. In the immunity challenge, Nate proved his worth by swimming well – and shaming Brad into doing the same.

Nate is playing a very good game. He’s making allies, learning about the other tribe, and proving to be very useful in challenges. I wouldn’t be surprised if he won the MVP award again next week. Well played, Nate.

At the beginning of Episode 7, Candice, Yul, and Becky discussed their planned voting order for Aitu. They determined that Ozzy would be next. Ozzy was an easy pick. He was outside their alliance, and with a merge ever looming, a potentially massive threat for individual immunity. Best to get rid of him while they still can.

Being no fool, Ozzy knew that his curly mop was on the chopping block. He started his campaign of proving his worth by kicking major butt in the immunity challenge. He’s a strong swimmer anyway, but he also showed he was smart by throwing the club ahead of him and using both arms to swim. That gained him a major lead on the other tribe. Then when he had to retrieve the key that Candice didn’t get, he smashed the box with his fist. Impressive!

Ozzy also continued to provide food for everyone. Just in case they were getting tired of the massive amounts of fish he was catching, he managed to snare a bird. He then reminded everyone that without him, they won’t have nearly as much to eat.

Candice described Ozzy as “part man, part fish, part monkey.” I can see that, and that’s what made me think of superhero Beast Boy. Beast Boy has the ability to transform himself into any animal. And while he was in animal form, he could take on all of the powers and characteristics of that animal – like breathing underwater, strength, speed, and so on. Like Beast Boy, Ozzy can hold his breath for so long he’s practically a fish. He can swim faster than anyone else out there. And he can hunt as well as any predator in the wild.

In the end, Aitu decided to hang on to their own Beast Boy for at least another vote. Kudos to Ozzy for proving his worth.
