The Amazing Race 10, Episode 11: Like Sands Through the Hourglass

by Jenn Brasler -- 11/27/2006
…These are the days of our lives. Or maybe just the Yield. Though this episode is almost like a soap opera. There’s kidnapping, rivalry, and many plot twists. Dustin & Kandice (right) have earned the wrath of the other teams left in the race, and they’ve also proven that they’re one of the more competitive teams. Will it all come crashing down on them?

Previously on Don’t Choose What the Chos Chose: Five teams rappelled in Finland, then had to travel to Kiev, Ukraine instead of the Pit Stop. Dustin & Kandice and Zoolander stayed in the lead and held up an “uneasy alliance.” Some of the racers drove tanks, then rapped or looked for music. Zoolander came in first and the Chos lost out on their alliance with Dublyn and wound up getting eliminated. We’re down to the final four teams, which means there will be at least one two-woman team in the final three:

Tyler & James (Team Zoolander) - Models/recovering drug addicts/At least they’ve stopped talking about their recovery

Dustin & Kandice - Friends/Go, blonds, go!

Rob & Kimberly - Dating/Know how not to fight

Lyn & Karlyn (Team Dublyn) - Friends/Shut up already

Phil says hi from Kiev. Will Dublyn survive without people to mooch off of? Zoolander are the first to leave at 7:33 a.m. They’re sent to Ouarzazate, Morocco, where they’ll then have to drive to an antique shop and get a good-luck charm. One of the four charms handed out will bring actual luck at the Pit Stop. Tyler interviews that his and James’ ideal final three would be them (of course), Rob & Kimberly, and Dublyn. They recognize that Dustin & Kandice would be a tough team to beat. Needless to say, that is not my idea final three. Zoolander get back in one of those annoying Russian cars, but at least they just have to get to the airport in it.

Dustin & Kandice leave next, just eight minutes behind Zoolander. Dustin wrote a paper on Morocco in college. She interviews that the spirit of competition is driving them, not the money. They just don’t want to settle for anything other than first place. Dustin, stop jinxing yourself. You get enough of that from Phil constantly reminding you that you could be the first two-woman team to win. Zoolander head to the airport with a cab driver.

Kimberly & Rob leave next. Rob is learning how to calm down. Kimberly says that he’s learning that sometimes you can’t control things, and in those circumstances, there’s no point in freaking out. Well said. Dustin & Kandice arrive at the airport first and are recommended to get a flight through Italy. They’ll get to Casablanca at 3 p.m., but they’re worried that they’ll have a small window of time for their connecting flight. They get the tickets anyway.

Zoolander arrive next, grumbling about Dustin & Kandice beating them, and try to get on the same flight as the blonds. There are no more seats. Kandice & Dustin ask about tickets to Ouarzazate; there’s a flight that will arrive at 10:55 p.m., so they get tickets on that as well.

Dublyn leave at 9:08 a.m., more than an hour and a half after Zoolander. They reveal that no teams got any money for this leg. Lyn interviews that it’s strange to be the last team from the Six Pack, but she’s proud. They started the race by themselves and will finish by themselves. Hopefully in the middle of Alaska, like the Guidos in season 1.

Rob & Kimberly meet up with Zoolander at the airport and get tickets on a flight that arrives in Casablanca at 4:35 p.m. It doesn’t matter since they’re also on the flight to Ouarzazate that arrives at 10:55. The blonds approach to find out what everyone else is doing and Rob messes with their heads by telling them that they arrive in Casablanca at 1 p.m. They believe him. Rob interviews that Dustin & Kandice race with a certain amount of arrogance and he doesn’t like their style of racing. You mean… well? Rob breaks the truth to the blonds, who laugh it off. They don’t have to hang around with the others for long, since their flight to Casablanca leaves first.

Dublyn arrive at the airport and get a flight through Paris that arrives at 10. There’s only one flight to Ouarzazate, the 10:55 flight, so that’s cutting it pretty close. They get tickets and the three teams who aren’t the blonds fly to Casablanca. Dustin & Kandice rush to get on their connecting flight, even though they’re there 45, not 50, minutes before it leaves. The ticket agent rejects them and they grumble about her, though I’m sure it wasn’t her fault.

Zoolander and Kimberly & Rob land in Paris and get on their connecting flight to Casablanca. Dublyn have a three-hour layover there, but they get a map from a bookstore and spread it out all over the freaking lounge. They claim to be smarter racers than the others think. In Casablanca, James wonders where Dustin & Kandice are. Dublyn catch up with Zoolander and Rob & Kimberly as James and Rob continue to talk about the blonds.

Said blonds check in elsewhere, excited to see the other teams’ reaction when they see them on the plane. James is the first to spot them, and he just stares at them like, “I thought when I stopped doing drugs, the hallucinations would stop, too.” Kandice tells Rob that they just had a delay problem. Rob says he was “literally crushed” (please learn the correct meaning of the word “literally” before you use it) and that they took an unnecessary risk to get somewhere they were all connecting from. He had hoped that their way of racing would be their “fatal mistake.” He uses a lot of dramatic words, doesn’t he?

So all of the teams fly to Ouarzazate together, and Kandice & Dustin are the first out of the airport. They pay someone to let him follow them. As they’re leaving, Zoolander and Rob & Kimberly emerge and hope to catch up with them. Dublyn are bringing up the rear, as usual. Where’s your alliance now, ladies? Rob is “so over” the blonds and wants to “take them out.” Dustin & Kandice’s guide stops and they wonder if they’re in the right place, but he’s just getting directions. Zoolander and Rob & Kimberly stop, too, because as much as they dislike the blonds, they’re not above using them.
