American Idol 6, May 9: The Fantastic Four

We’re down to the final four, and soon we’ll just have three singers left. Everyone’s smiling except LaKisha. Make of that what you will. Tonight we’ll get performances from Barry Gibb and Pink, plus a preview of the new Fantastic Four movie.

Simon and Paula have traded seats, for some reason; Simon further imitates Paula by clapping like a seal, and Paula rubs her chest. Ryan says Simon has more to work with in that area, but apparently that’s a good thing. Paula says they traded because Jessica Alba is sitting nearby and if Simon were in his normal seat, he’d be all over her. I’m thinking Michael Chiklis will be able to hold him off.

Ryan says the final four often brings a shocking result. Randy doesn’t know what to expect. Paula thinks having two songs helped some last night, but not everyone. They know who they are. Ryan says Simon was “just brilliant” last night. Simon gives credit to the little people, AKA Paula and Randy.

First, a recap of last night. Blake beatboxed to “You Should Be Dancing” but Simon didn’t enjoy it. He also sang “This is Where I Came In.” Yeah, that’s about it. Simon denied LaKisha a kiss after “Stayin’ Alive.” She then sang “Run to Me,” and it was better than the first song, but not by much. Jordin rocked “To Love Somebody,” but not so much “Woman in Love.” Melinda bored Simon with “Love You Inside and Out” but impressed him with “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.”

Ryan does his man-on-the-street thing again. There’s some gushing over Barry Gibb, then some singing on the streets. I’m sick of this segment. Someone does call Ryan “Brian,” though. Two women give funny Paula impersonations. Ryan asks a little girl who will win, and she says, “The Lakers.” Hee.

We get a bit of a memorable-moments montage as Ryan tells us about the tour. “Lock up your daughters,” he says about Sanjaya.

Ryan tries to make us believe that Pink is here to perform live, but this was actually taped weeks ago. It was supposed to air during “Idol Gives Back” but there wasn’t time. Also, rumor has it that Pink was supposed to sing “U + Ur Hand” but wouldn’t change the un-family-friendly lyrics. Anyway, she sings “Who Knew,” which is a great song, except the backup singers are too loud and it’s hard to hear her. I think Pink has a very underrated voice – if you ever get a chance to listen to her song “Misery,” you should, because she sounds amazing on it.

This week’s Ford commercial is a Beatles take-off to “You Really Got Me.” I would analyze which Idol is which Beatle, but I’m tired.

Trivia question. I so don’t care.

Paula has allowed Simon to get his seat back, so I wonder if Jessica left. Ryan and Randy have some stupid lines about Barry Gibb songs, which leads to a medley from the Idols. Melinda starts it off with “Emotions,” but her mic isn’t on. Someone’s getting fired! Blake’s mic is off, too, and it sounds like the ladies are overpowering him.

Next they sing “Too Much Heaven,” “Guilty,” “Islands in the Stream,” “You Win Again,” and “Chain Reaction.” (I had to look up all those songs, by the way, as my knowledge of Bee Gees songs is greatly limited. I do like “Emotions,” though.) Ryan calls them the Lewis sisters, then says his night has been made by seeing Bill Maher lip-sync to “Islands in the Stream.” Who let Bill Maher in?

Results time, maybe? Ryan says LaKisha was talking to herself during the commercial break. She says she was telling herself to remember the words if she gets eliminated. Ryan asks Jordin what it was like to do two songs. She says she had to pick them fast, and she liked the songs, but it was “double the trouble.” Ryan gives Blake a chance to talk back to Simon. He admits that usually he’s in the moment after a performance, so he just nods and smiles. Now he just wants to say, “thank you.”

Ryan asks why LaKisha looked uneasy last night. She says there were a lot of things going on, and she was hoping Simon would kiss her again. Ryan warns that Simon’s girlfriend is in the audience. Maybe Simon should stop flirting with Jessica Alba then.

Ryan notes that Melinda is consistent but the judges want her to stand out more. Melinda says it’s interesting because her goal was to be consistent with all of the themes. Ryan notes that the final three get to go home (but not in the way the person eliminated tonight will). They also got a sneak preview of The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. The director, Tim Story, introduces it to them. I never saw the first movie, so I don’t really care about this. All I know is that Chris Evans is cute.

Afterward, the Idols say they’ll be in the next movie. Blake will be Johnny Torch. LaKisha will be the Invisible Woman, only she can’t get it out in words and Melinda makes fun of her for it.

Back in the theater, Ryan introduces the four stars of the movie. Jessica Alba appears to be missing, but it’s just because she’s the Invisible Woman. She gets to plug the movie. Ryan gets to touch Ioan Gruffudd. I’m jealous! Jessica keeps talking but Ryan needs his microphone back. He compliments her blondish hair and she flirts, “You like blonds?” Ryan has to take a second to regain his concentration.
