“You Don’t Really Have Friends on the Ship” – An Interview with Pirate Master’s Jupiterby David Bloomberg -- 07/19/2007
View Printable version of this article Watching the eighth episode of Pirate Master, it wasn’t 100% clear why Jupiter did what she did and said what she said. Now she has a chance to explain it in her own words, without having to worry about editing. Read on! RNO: Going into the show, what did you expect? Jupiter: I was unsure of what to expect, to be honest with you. It all kind of happened in a whirlwind. I had about a month before actually diving in. A lot of people have like months and months to prepare and have a little better idea of what’s going to go on. When I found out I’d gotten it, I started working out and trying to eat healthy because I knew the competition would be really hard. I knew it would be physically hard, and it was hard to prepare in general for that. RNO: Did you have any particular strategy going in? Jupiter: I had decided I wasn’t going to try to use a strategy. I was just going to go for it and take it as it came. I knew I wasn’t going to use the fact that I’m a lesbian – I wasn’t going to tell anyone about that. That could either have worked for me or against me. I was just going to go for it and take it as it came, in hopes the decisions I made in the now were going to work for me. RNO: How did your plans change once the game began? Jupiter: After the first couple days, I kind of sat back and thought, “Wow, what did I get myself into?” It’s a pretty ruthless game, you really can’t trust anyone. Once the game started, I had to really focus on what I said and who I talked to, which I wasn’t really expecting that to happen. I thought that maybe I’d have a friend, but you don’t really have friends on the ship. RNO: Why were you so loyal to Azmyth? Jupiter: Azmyth and I within the first day or two we really connected on a spiritual level. We were kind of talking and we realized we had a lot of things in common. I kind of felt like he’s my friend, a buddy, like we kind of saw eye to eye on a lot of things spiritually. And we’re both from L.A. We just kind of decided that I got your back. Getting the black spot, I was like, he didn’t really realize what I was trying to do was help him out. The whole end of it, nobody stood up and defended themselves when it came to the whole mutiny thing. I was giving them a chance to say they do want change. And [giving] Azmyth a chance to say he would pick new officers and he didn’t. RNO: Why did you bring up the mutiny issue in such a public fashion instead of privately? Jupiter: It comes down to, if it was going to be said, it was going to be said. I could have told him alone and it wouldn’t have mattered probably. I basically wanted to give everyone an opportunity to voice their opinions. They weren’t doing it. It was kind of like a now or never kind of thing. I’ll pave the way for you, you can say what you want to say. Or you can talk behind his back and it may not get you anywhere. I chose to be the voice for everyone and they backed down. I was standing up for everyone. I thought it was the best thing to do, but maybe it wasn’t. RNO: It appeared they wanted to talk behind his back. Jupiter: The thing was I had told them I was going to say something. They already knew. I told them, “At dinner, I’m going to say it. I’m going to bring this up.” Nobody said at the time, “Don’t say anything,” or, “Maybe it’s not a good idea.” They were like, “Cool, whatever.” When I did bring it up and nobody stepped up, it became something totally different. That’s what was so disappointing, was I was being the voice for people and they didn’t have their own voice all of a sudden. RNO: Why, in your speech defending yourself, did you specifically say you wouldn’t mutiny? Didn’t that bring with it the possibility of the others voting you out for that very reason? Jupiter: When it was coming down to mutiny, I was saying I wasn’t going to vote against Azmyth to Azmyth. One of things they didn’t show was Azmyth read off a list of all these things that he felt were not right as a crew member. Several of them had to do with mutiny. So I said I wouldn’t mutiny. He thought I was trying to mutiny against him. So it became a strange catch-22, him thinking I would mutiny and me saying I wouldn’t. I probably didn’t think it out well enough when I was standing on the black spot. RNO: Who were you the closest with on the ship? Jupiter: I think Azmyth and I were probably the closest. I don’t know. I was very, very loyal to him. The thing was I got close to a couple different people in the crew, like Cheryl – she helped me through the first couple expeditions and really pushed me and gave me drive. The feeling of winning a treasure after she was pushing me, I found respect for her. Another person I became close with was Sean. We were in the galley cooking every day, breakfast and dinner, trying to make something out of nothing with the food they were giving us. You build bonds especially over cooking and how you’re going to make the crew happy without them being upset with you. As time went on, I started becoming close with Laurel. I really like Laurel, she is really cool. But all in all, probably Azmyth – which is why it’s so disappointing that it all came down the way it did. RNO: How did Azmyth divide up the most recent treasure? Jupiter: I believe it was all in fair, equally distributed. I got an extra $500 for cooking. RNO: So he didn’t take a larger cut this time? That wasn’t really clear on the show. Jupiter: Honestly, I don’t think he did. RNO: Did the rest of the crew know you were being paid more as the cook before Azmyth brought it up? Jupiter: Yes. They knew I was being paid more. When Sean was cooking, he got paid more too. RNO: Speaking of being the cook, how well did the officers eat in comparison to the rest of the crew? Jupiter: The officers ate like kings. Every morning they got bread, bacon, eggs, fruit, potatoes. When you’re out on these expeditions, you’re fighting for that meal too, you know you’re going to get a good meal. One more thing to push for when you’re out there doing the expeditions. RNO: Did you get to eat as well as the officers? Jupiter: No. that’s one thing I actually pride myself on – I ate exactly as the crew ate. I kind of have a guilty conscience sometimes. I made sure I wasn’t taking extra food. If I were to be caught, there could be just of much of a chance for the crew to say, “Jupiter is stealing food, she’s got to go.” I would divvy up everything we had completely evenly, almost to the point where they would get irritated with me. RNO: Do you know if anybody considered throwing a challenge to get Azmyth out of power? Jupiter: No, I don’t know that. RNO: Do you have anything else you want to tell us about your time on Pirate Master? Jupiter: Being out in the middle of the Caribbean, sailing on a pirate ship, was probably one of the best things that happened in my life. I also turned 30 on the ship, which was the same day I put makeup on people. That was my only present because the birthday song hadn’t been invented yet. Speaking of my birthday, my birthday morning, I was standing on midship and was like, all I want is bacon on my birthday. A few minutes later, the captain came down and asked me if I would like to join them for a birthday breakfast. I got to go up on the front of the ship and eat with the captain and his two mates for my 30th birthday. It wasn’t shown, but it was something that happened that I was really appreciative of. All in all it was an amazing experience and I would do it all over again. RNO: Thanks, Jupiter!
