So You Think You Can Dance 3, July 19: Mary’s Pissed

by Asher Streets -- 07/20/2007
Two dancers leave tonight, giving us our top 10. The elimination of one dancer was not unanimous, and silences the usually jabbery Mary Murphy (right). Who doesn’t make the tour? Or maybe I should say: who are the alternates for the tour?

Last night, I ranked the couples as such:

  1. Sabra & Dominic, jive
  2. Anya & Danny, foxtrot
  3. Sara & Pasha, jazz
  4. Jaimie & Hok, contemporary
  5. Lacey & Kameron, hip hop
  6. Lauren & Neil, contemporary

I think Lauren is in trouble if Neil didn’t pull in enough of the teeny vote. Hok is in major trouble, though. The judges were clear in their displeasure. If Lauren isn’t in the bottom, I think it may be Sara or Anya. It pains me to think about it, though.

Cat looks great with her tie-dyed strapless dress, and hair up in a ponytail. Tonight we’ll find out who’s in the top 10, and thus on the tour. (Although last year Jessica and Jaymz toured and performed in group numbers, despite landing lower in the rankings than Ashlee and Musa.)

This evening’s group dance is to “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” by Cami Thompson. Hey, my wife’s name is Cami! The costumes are 1940s sailor outfits and women’s military regalia. Hok and Kameron get to wear black sailor’s outfits. It’s so funny to see our dancers in these costumes. They look great!

I like the swing moves and fun footwork. Hey, Pasha gets to dance with Anya and Lacey. The guys leap over the women and swing them all over the place. This is a fun number. Hee… they’re lining up in two rows for Cat to pass between. They salute Cat, of course. It was conducted by Jean-Marc Genereux. Well done, Jean-Marc.

Cat’s earrings are ginormous. Her poor lobes. Cat reminds us yet again that we’ll lose two dancers who won’t get to tour. Well, maybe they will… but without the billing. Our jidges are Wade, Mary, and Nigel. On with the results.

I love how we don’t have to endure a commercial before getting the satisfaction of knowing some results. Sabra/Dominic and Anya/Danny await their fate. One is in the bottom. Cut to some earlier footage of Sabra explaining that she has to go wake up Dominic, since they need to dance in one minute. They dance a jive by Tony Meredith. Sabra and Dominic got great reviews from the judges. I thought they were the best of the night. I just loved how Sabra kicked Dominic off the stage.

Anya and Danny danced a foxtrot last night. They looked terrific and surprised the judges. Mary thought they were the best of the night, and the best foxtrot Nigel’s ever seen. High praise, but they’re probably in the bottom.

Sabra and Dominic are… safe. Indeed. Danny’s fine, but I’m not so sure about Anya. Sweetheart, if you pick another ridiculous costume, I’ll stop rooting for you. Also, no ballads, and dance!

Mary is frustrated that they keep falling to the bottom, since they are such great dancers. If Mary has anything to say about it, they’re not going down on her watch.

Between Jaimie/Hok and Sara/Pasha, one couple is in the bottom. Wow, Jaimie has quite the glittery bra. Last night, Hok and Jaimie danced a strange Broadway number. Wade didn’t feel they connected to the story, but they loved Jaimie’s elegance. Hok was dissed by all.

Sara and Pasha danced a jazz routine, chock full of jazz hands. It was such a weird dance. The judges liked it a lot. They did the best they could with the strangeness they were handed. Mary wasn’t sure if they’d stay out of danger. I voted constantly for them last night. Let’s hope it worked.

America voted and… voting matters! Yes! Anya and Pasha are safe. See you on the tour!! Nigel thinks tonight is a tough one. Hok is so unique as a dancer, but the last few weeks Nigel thinks Hok’s been extremely challenged.

Jaimie’s teacher is Denise Wall, who also teaches Travis and Danny. Nigel compliments Jaimie and Denise. He thinks other teachers and students should take note of Jaimie’s lines and beauty, because Jaimie is extremely beautiful as a dancer. He congratulates both of them. Nigel hopes both Hok and Jaimie will do well. Jaimie is excited to do her solo… she sounds a bit nervous, though.

Between Lauren/Neil and Lacey/Kameron, one couple will be in the bottom. Lauren and Neil performed a 22nd century contemporary dance to minimalistic piano with hip hop beats and lyrics. The judges liked it, but didn’t really understand it. I didn’t like Lauren’s mannishness.

Lacey and Kameron did hip hop as bad school kids. Lacey was too raunchy for me. Wade called it contrived… I think that’s apt. But they thought Kameron was too soft. Kameron’s solo didn’t do it for them. Lacey didn’t choke on her gum, though.

The final couple is… Lauren and Neil. Lauren’s outta here. So… Lacey and Kameron successfully avoided the bottom this whole time. Hugs all around. Neil and Lauren fidget. Neil looks confident, but Lauren, not so much.

Wade loved them last night. He thinks maybe the goggles thing was a problem for America. He encourages them to put blood on the dance floor tonight. Neil looks excited. I’m pretty sure he’s safe. I think we will be saying goodbye to Lauren and Hok.

Tonight they have a special guest performer who will tap. Due to the time constraints they have, they can’t teach tap routines. Huh. Is that why they never tap? Does it really take that much longer to learn? OK, I’ll recap the tap dancer. Lame singers, no. Dancers, perchance.

Jason Samuel Smith struts out looking a little like the stoner boyfriend of an old college friend, just back from his job as a waiter. His taps are crisp and inventive. I like the rolls. He does some heel work, and then long sequences that inspire lots of girls to scream. He goes up and down a platform with stairs. The sliding style he does on top of the platform gets more cheers.
