Canadian Idol 5, August 21: Top Five Results, and Kelly Too!by Brian Towers -- 08/22/2007
View Printable version of this article Series host Ben Mulroney opens the show by immediately calling for a group number from the remaining contestants. It’s Eric Clapton’s “Change The World.” Matt starts it off and then the others take a couple of lines each before they wrap it up as a chorus. Actually, it’s a bit draggy and they aren’t singing together. Better luck next week! Ben then welcomes us to the show, tells us there were almost four million votes (a new season high), mentions that Kelly Clarkson will perform later, introduces the judges, and then jumps to a video recap of last night’s performances. Whew! Ben introduces Kelly next, and she sings “Never Again.” When she finishes, Ben presents her with a Platinum Record award for the new My December CD. Kelly tells us she’s coming back on tour in the fall. Kelly follows up with the softer, kinder “Because of You.” It’s safe to say this is way better than Maroon 5 was last week, and the fans show their appreciation for her efforts. It’s now time for the results. Ben says the two with the lowest vote totals will be called to center stage, where one will get the bad news. Here’s what Ben said: “Brian Melo… you are the first… safe competitor. Dwight d’Eon… you are one of the singers who received the fewest votes. Please come to center stage.” Matt Rapley, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Jaydee Bixby are dealt with as a group. “Jaydee… you are safe. Carly Rae… so are you. Matt Rapley, I’m sorry, you are in the bottom two.’ So… the bottom two are: Dwight d'Eon and Matt Rapley. Ben turns to the judges for opinions. He asks Zack about these results and he says, “There’s only one rule in this show, ultimately: Canada picks the Idol.” Jake Gold doesn’t feel the duo had trouble connecting with the song and says, “They both did a great job.” Sass is asked if it’s hard to say goodbye at this point. Duh! She says that getting this far is “a huge achievement.” Farley Flex is asked to comment on the next theme, “The Standards.” He says, in part, “The challenge is to let your signature style permeate (the performances).” Back from commercial, Ben quickly tells us that Dwight is safe and therefore Matt Rapley is the one going home. Ben cues Matt’s funeral video and he rocks us out. All the others let him have center stage, but they’re singing along with Matt. Final Comments: Next week, the guest coach is arguably one of the first true “Canadian Idols,” Paul Anka, and the theme is “The Standards.” That’s usually a good one, although personally, the prospect of hearing Tony Bennett’s classic updated to “I Left My Heart In Drumheller” is a tad eerie. Poll Results: With so little time to amass votes, there has been insufficient response so far and for me to report results would not be responsible. So… I’ll hold the poll open until sometime late this weekend and include my report of the results in the Monday article. Yes, knowing that Matt is gone may affect the results of one particular question, but I can work around that. So… Click here to participate in the poll!
