Dancing with the Stars 5, October 16: Illegal Motionsby Jill Jones -- 10/17/2007
View Printable version of this article Last night on Dancing with the Stars, the couples performed the paso doble and Viennese waltz; the goobers were flying as Sabrina & Mark scored 30 points out of 30. Tonight, another couple will be eliminated from the competition. I predict it will be Karina & Floyd, which means Kym & Mark will leave the show. Before we get into the action, let’s dish about Carrie Ann’s gripe fest from last evening. If you missed it or haven’t read my recap yet, I’ll fill you in. Basically, Carrie Ann questioned several of the dancers’ moves and referred to them as illegal lifts. She was actually rude toward Jane and in my opinion stepped over the line of appropriate behavior. I agree that a dancer should follow the rules, but there is no need to become belligerent. Also, this is supposed to be a fun competition. Leave the hostility out of it and keep it entertaining. Also, several of the moves that Carrie Ann deemed to be illegal lifts may not even be lifts. According to The Dance Store Online, a lift is “a theatrical type of movement in which the follower's body weight is completely supported by the leader and held aloft.” However, Carrie Ann defines a lift as a move that a dancer can’t perform on his or her own. As I mentioned last night, Karina reacted to Carrie Ann’s definition as if it were the first time she heard it. Perhaps the producers need to review and clarify the rules beforehand. To me, the most annoying part of the entire situation though was when Carrie Ann failed to say much of anything to Cameron about his lift and later thanked Julianne for keeping one of her feet on the floor during her performance with Helio. I don’t want to accuse Carrie Ann of unfairly judging the couples, but I do detect a hint of favoritism in some of her comments. OK, enough of this – let’s get to the good stuff! Tom and Samantha welcome us to the results show. They also go over the performances. Mmmmmmm, filler! Next, they review the current scoreboard:
Len tells us that he, Bruno, and Carrie Ann have selected Edyta & Cameron to dance tonight’s encore performance. Yawn. I didn’t like the routine last night and I don’t like it tonight. It’s as if Cameron is just walking through it. Oh, well – that’s why there’s chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Tom tells us that Gloria Estefan was going to perform on tonight’s show, but for personal reasons couldn’t make it. (I heard that her mother is very ill and she went to Miami to be with her.) Instead of Gloria, we have the house band’s singers perform while some of the professionals dance. I think I’ll just leave it at that. The audience members tell us what they think of last night’s show. Some of them frighten me. Ashly DelGrosso is in the audience with her baby boy. She tells us, “you can’t lift your toes off the floor with help.” I think that is the best explanation of illegal lifts so far. Ian Ziering cheers for his friend Jennie. Tom and Samantha finally reveal the first two couples that are safe. They are Sabrina & Mark and Edyta & Cameron. Jimmy Kimmel and Guillermo take us behind the scenes. Guillermo explains that he hurt himself trying to dance like a Cheetah Girl. Jimmy explains the tanning process that the dancers go through. Guillermo gets a tan, and as a result, he shrinks and wrinkles. The hilarity never ends. Samantha talks to Sabrina about the perfect score she earned with Mark. Sabrina says that receiving the score was an honor. Cameron tells us he hurt himself last night. I’m glad to see that his injury wasn’t serious. Dancer/choreographer Wade Robson performs for us. He and the dancers who accompany do a fun-house themed routine. It is, um, interesting, and unlike anything this ballroom has ever seen. Cool! Wayne is back. He sings for us while Cheryl & Drew dance. They perform an illegal lift. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Various famous partners tell us about successful relationships. Rev Run Simmons tells us that partners have to trust one another. Melissa Rivers explains that there has to be a level of respect for one another as well. Tom and Samantha disclose the next couple that is continuing in their quest for the disco ball trophy. Kym & Mark are moving on, but unfortunately, Karina & Floyd might not be – they are in the bottom two. The stars talk about their fears of performing live. Marie says that she doesn’t know how to fix a mistake that she makes with her feet. Jane talks about the nightmares she’s been having since the show started. Cameron worries about dropping Edyta and says that if it happened, it would be horrible. Do you think? Tom and Samantha tell us which other couples are remaining in the competition. Jennie & Derek, Julianne & Helio, Marie & Jonathan, and Jane & Tony are safe. That means that Mel & Maksim are in the bottom two with Karina & Floyd. Tom tells us that after all of the votes were tallied, the couple going home is Karina & Floyd. Hey, I got one right! This makes me kind of sad though; Floyd looks so disappointed. He’s a competitor, so I’m sure this isn’t easy for him. The judges give the couple a standing ovation. Karina tells Floyd that she loves him. Tom lets Floyd plug his upcoming fight again. Floyd definitely goes out a winner. Join me next week as the remaining eight couples focus on the samba and rhumba. As always, Yoko and I will be here to recap all of the highlights for you, call out grumpy judges, and keep an eye out for goobers.
