Dancing with the Stars 5, October 30: Missing In Action

by Jill Jones -- 10/31/2007
Monday night on Dancing with the Stars, the remaining couples performed a variety of individual dances and a very chaotic group dance; Mel and Maksim scored a triple goober. Tonight, Tony (right) is missing dance partner Jane – who scored lowest according to the judges. Will she return? Also, Barry Manilow entertains us, Bruno and Carrie Ann pimp their new show, Dance War.

Before we begin, let’s review the answers to my quiz (if by some chance you didn’t see my quiz, you can read it now). Here are the references to songs I included in my recap:

  • Let’s get it started
  • Wish you were here
  • Gimme more
  • You’re beautiful
  • That’s how we roll

Wasn’t that fun?

Tom and Samantha welcome us to the show and review the previous night’s dancing. Please, read my recap instead. I beg of you.

Tom also tells us that Jane may have food poisoning so she’s not on stage tonight. She’s really experienced it all during her time on Dancing on the Stars. I hope she feels better soon.

Next, our co-hosts review the current standings:

RANKINGSTARSCOREJILL’S RANKING
1 Mel 30 1
2 Helio 28 4
3 Jennie 27 3
4 Cameron 25 5
4 Sabrina 25 2
5 Marie 23 6
6 Jane 22 7

Len says that he, Bruno, and Carrie Ann have selected the group dance as the encore performance. Don’t get me wrong, there are some cool moves during the performance, but the rest of it is a bit hectic for me. Also, poor Tony has to dance by himself since Jane can’t perform.

Tom and Samantha welcome the Los Angeles county firefighters to the show. Their work against the fires in California is much appreciated to say the least.

Barry Manilow sings “Night Song” while Cheryl and MY Louis van Amstel dance. Louis look fabulous! He and Cheryl perform some serious moves; they even work the judges’ table.

The audience tells us what it thinks of the dancing the night before. They basically say what the judges said with their paddles except one woman feels that Mel and Maksim should have scored a 27 instead of a 30. Yeah, look at Maksim’s chest and say that, lady!

Tom and Samantha (I miss you, Drew) reveal the first two couples that are safe. They are Mel & Maksim and Jane & Tony. Since Tony has no one to hug on stage, Maksim leaps into his arms.

Samantha talks to Mel, Maksim, and Tony backstage. I ignore her.

Tom talks about Dance Wars, the new show that pits Carrie Ann and Bruno against one another. Basically, they will put together teams that can sing and dance, and the teams will compete against one another for world dominance. Goody. We get a sampling of the choreography from the show as a multitude of performers hit the stage. Their dancing certainly doesn’t fall into the category of ballroom, but it is fun; even Len is clapping along to the music and the moves.

Ahhh, my eyes! Samantha shimmies. Stop!

Barry Manilow is back with another song. Why, it’s none other than “Mandy.” Anna and Jonathan perform to it, and their dance is amazing. I love watching them perform together.

It’s time for filler! In a prerecorded segment, the celebrities get to ask the judges questions. Here are some highlights:

  • Marie asks Len why he felt she wouldn’t do well in the competition. Len answers by saying that he will never doubt someone’s ability if he or she is over 40.
  • Cameron asks Bruno if he and the other judges take the number of hours practiced into consideration when they score the dances. Bruno basically says that they judge what they see, but they do consider it if the dance is rough.
  • Jennie wants to know what she has to do to get a goober from Carrie Ann. Carrie Ann tells her to bring each and every week.
  • Jane asks Carrie Ann what constitutes a lift. Carrie Ann provides an explanation, but what I find to be interesting is that she says when she saw Edyta and Cameron perform a lift she deducted a point. The curious thing about this is that I don’t believe she mentioned the deduction during the scoring portion of that particular episode even though she was coming down hard on everyone else.

Tom points out that the couples that do not yet know their fate in the show have never been in the bottom two. Interesting.

The stars now talk about bondage, I mean, bonding. Marie is considered the caretaker; Jennie and Sabrina hit it off immediately; Mel thinks Helio is funny, but she can’t always understand him because of his accent.

Tom and Samantha reveal the next safe couples. They are Julianne & Helio, Jennie & Derek, and Marie & Jonathan. Holy cow! That means that Sabrina & Mark and Edyta & Cameron are in the bottom two.

The judges express their surprise over the voting. Even Yoko woofs at it.

Tom tells us that the couple that has been eliminated from the competition is Sabrina & Mark. As you might expect, the audience boos and gets a little crazy. I have to agree; I might even loot and plunder, but I’ll only do it in my refrigerator.

Sabrina is clearly upset, but she eloquently talks about her time on the show. Mark tells her that he loves her and is proud of what she’s done. As Sabrina and Mark dance a final dance together, they look as if they are crying. This is so sad and disappointing. I’m assuming the elimination happened, though, because a lot of people were put off my Sabrina’s perkiness and made their feelings known on various blogs. It sucks though because she and Mark kicked butt.

Join me next week as the couples perform not one, but two individual dances. I’m going to take some time now to digest what happened tonight… and what I pull from the fridge.
